PrePass(R) and E-ZPass(R) technologies offset Greenhouse Gas
Emissions of 20,000 U.S. Households Annually NEW YORK, Nov. 17
/PRNewswire/ -- PrePass(R) and E-ZPass(R) utilize intelligent
transportation technologies to yield a cleaner and greener
environment by reducing unnecessary idling and saving drivers time,
fuel and money. "The savings will continue to grow as more trucks,
PrePass-equipped weigh stations and toll facilities adopt time- and
fuel-saving technologies," said Richard P. Landis, president and
CEO of HELP Inc., the public-private partnership that offers
PrePass and PrePass Plus. PrePass is a sophisticated technology
that enables qualified motor carriers to comply electronically with
state-established weight, safety and credential requirements at
highway speeds. By avoiding weigh station stops and idling in
queues, motor carriers reduce fuel consumption and the associated
pollutants. PrePass will electronically process more than 57
million weigh station events this year, saving carriers at least
11.4 million gallons of fuel. Based on EPA engine idle reduction
and household emission estimates, PrePass will reduce emissions by
at least 115 thousand metric tons, the equivalent of emissions from
more than 6,000 U.S. households. PrePass Plus allows commercial
operators to use the same transponder to pay E-ZPass tolls
electronically. With a monthly E-ZPass bill in excess of $14
million dollars, PrePass Plus is the nation's largest toll
customer. "The benefits accumulate even more when the savings from
E-ZPass electronic toll collection (ETC) are included," said
Michael Huerta, president of ACS Transportation Solutions Group,
the largest E-ZPass system integrator and operator. "Last year
there were 3.4 billion toll transactions by E-ZPass operators, of
which 2.1 billion were ETC." Based on engineering estimates by MARK
IV, the E-ZPass technology provider, during 2007 alone E-ZPass
reduced fuel consumption by almost 30 million gallons. That's the
equivalent of nearly 265 thousand metric tons of related emissions
or the greenhouse gas emissions of about 14 thousand U.S.
households. By reducing congestion in and around weigh facilities
and tolling centers, PrePass and E-ZPass also improve highway
safety. PrePass enables enforcement personnel to concentrate on
those trucks most likely to be noncompliant, while E-ZPass reduces
lane changing and congestion around toll plazas. By reducing
government transportation program costs, both technologies enhance
resources available for other needed investments. Landis and Huerta
serve as secretary and vice chairman respectively of the
Intelligent Transportation Society of America. Huerta will serve as
the organization's chairman beginning in June 2009. Launched in
California in 1995, PrePass(R) is now operational at 281 sites in
28 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado,
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New
Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia,
West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Nearly 425,000 trucks have
voluntarily enrolled in PrePass to take advantage of the time,
money and fuel-saving benefits. About ACS ACS, a global FORTUNE 500
