Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (TSX:SWP) Canada's leading agri-business today launched
its new business name, brand and vision at a special ceremony attended by
dignitaries and special guests at the Buffalo Plains high throughput terminal
near Regina.
"Viterra" (pronounced VY-terra), which stands for "Life from the Land" was
unveiled at the historic event, providing those in attendance with a premiere
viewing of the new identity for the recently combined companies of Saskatchewan
Wheat Pool Inc. (the "Pool") and Agricore United ("AU"). The Pool and AU will
now carry on business as Viterra. The company also expects a change to its
ticker symbol in the near future that reflects the new business name.
"Viterra is a solutions-oriented company with the energy and commitment to
deliver on our promises and exceed customers' expectations. Our new business
name and branding reflects our position in Canada as the leading agri-business
and our enhanced status in the global marketplace. Viterra speaks to vitality,
growth and to the land that is essential to our business," said Mayo Schmidt,
Viterra's President and CEO.
"We are a company with a solid commitment to be Canada's and among the world's
most respected agri-business leaders. We now have the scale and scope to take on
projects that others cannot. Our size allows us to operate more efficiently,
leverage resources and technologies, and provide Viterra and our customers with
tremendous competitive advantages," said Mr. Schmidt.
With revenues estimated at over $4 billion, the new company sources agricultural
commodities through more than 100 grain handling and marketing facilities across
the Prairies, has strong export capabilities in British Columbia and Ontario,
and operates an agri-products retail network consisting of 276 sites
prairie-wide. Business holdings include 100% ownership of Western Co-operative
Fertilizers Ltd. a leading fertilizer distributor with investments in
manufacturing; Can-Oat Milling, the largest industrial oat miller in the world;
and Livestock Services, which has feed plants in Western Canada, Texas and New
Mexico.
"Our new company gives farmers across the Prairies access to a wider range of
proprietary seed varieties, fertilizer, a full line of crop protection products,
extensive agronomic and financial services and the largest network of grain
handling and marketing resources in Canada. Our destination customers in the
Pacific Rim, Europe, Latin America and other regions of the world, benefit from
a secure source of high quality crops, including identity-preserved varieties
grown to customer specifications. Going forward, our overarching goal as a
leader in Canadian agriculture is to become a processor and manufacturer of
quality products, utilizing our grain and agri-products asset base and expertise
to support value-added opportunities," said Mr. Schmidt, adding that agriculture
now involves production targeted at food, feed, and fuel as well as health and
wellness.
Addressing the gathered guests, Mr. Schmidt paid tribute to the respective
histories of the Pool and AU and to those who created the two agri-businesses.
"It was on prairie fields like this that farmers laid the foundation for the
companies that would shape Canada's agri-business industry. The men and women
who built Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Alberta Wheat Pool, Manitoba Pool Elevators,
United Grain Growers - and later Agricore United - embodied the spirit of
business leadership that we carry forward. Today, we stand on the shoulders of
giants, with the ability to see farther, dream bigger, and expand the potential
of Canada's agri-business industry," Schmidt said.
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Inc., doing business as Viterra, is Canada's leading
agri-business, with extensive operations and distribution capabilities across
Western Canada, and with operations in the United States and Japan. The new
company is diversified into sales of crop inputs and services, grain handling
and marketing, livestock feed, agri-food processing and financial services.
These operations are complemented by value-added businesses and strategic
alliances, which allow Viterra to leverage its pivotal position between Prairie
farmers and destination customers. The Company's common shares are listed on the
Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol SWP.
