Company's Associates Exceed Challenge Set by CEO BOISE, Idaho, May 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Albertson's, Inc. (NYSE: ABS) announced today that its associates have contributed more than 1.8 million volunteer hours in the past year supporting charitable causes across the nation through its companywide volunteer program, CORUS. The total number of volunteer hours, logged between May 1, 2005 and April 30, 2006, easily exceeded the company's goal of 1.8 million hours. Albertsons established the CORUS associate volunteer program in 2003 to encourage and facilitate volunteerism within the Albertsons family of stores. The program is driven by 190 local CORUS chapters nationwide, which include individuals in local stores and offices who organize volunteer events and champion charitable causes. Last year Albertsons associates exceeded the company's annual goal by contributing more than 1.4 millions hours, prompting Albertsons chairman, president, and CEO Larry Johnston to set this year's goal at 1.8 million hours. "Through their unwavering energy and dedication to their communities, our associates continue to raise the bar for excellence in community citizenship," said Johnston. "Every year their commitment to service gets stronger and stronger, and I am extremely proud of their accomplishments." Over the past year, CORUS volunteers have donated their time to support thousands of local causes that fall within Albertsons' designated charitable focus areas of hunger relief, education and the development of our youth, health and nutrition, and environmental stewardship. The company's efforts were heightened this year by its membership in the Hands On Network -- a new alliance of corporations and organizations working to increase volunteerism nationwide. Albertsons is one of 52 Fortune 500 companies and civic leaders partnering with the Hands On Network on an ambitious campaign to mobilize 6.4 million volunteers over the next two years, representing a 10 percent increase in volunteerism nationwide and increasing corporate employee efforts by 10 percent. Many of the projects that Albertsons volunteers contributed to this year were connected to the Hands On Network. Albertsons is one of the world's largest food and drug retailers. The company's divisions and subsidiaries operate approximately 2,500 stores in 37 states across the U.S. and employ approximately 240,000 associates. Its banners include Albertsons, Acme, Shaw's, Jewel-Osco, Sav-on Drugs, Osco Drug, and Star Market, as well as Super Saver and Bristol Farms, which are operated independently.
