Barry Schwartz is on a mission to make dog food healthy. We love
our pets, but sometimes we express that love by spoiling our
animals with the wrong kinds of food, says Mr. Schwartz, CEO and
Director of All American Pet Company, a California-based business
that makes canine nutrition a top priority. Mr. Schwartz offers the
following seven tips for a sounder, more balanced diet for dogs:
Affection Not Food: When it comes to indulging pets, shower
your dog with affection, not food. Showing the love through big
meals and excessive snacks can lead to health problems like obesity
and diabetes. Stress Breakfast: The most important meal of the
day for people, breakfast is equally essential for pets. Exercise
Portion Control: Similar to dieticians, most veterinarians now
recommend more frequent meals with greater portion control for
pets. The Five Per Cent Rule: Treats should be given in
moderation and should represent five per cent or less of a dogs
daily food intake. Stay Hydrated: Fresh, clean water is more
important to your dog than any other nutrient. While dogs can
survive for days without food, lack of water can kill them, so keep
pets well hydrated, especially in hot weather and when they are
especially active. Avoid Raw Foods: Raw meat, poultry, fish,
and eggs may contain bacteria, such as salmonella, that can make
your dog very sick, so it is recommended to avoid these foods. To
prevent accidental illness, keep a tight lid on the garbage. Look
At The Label: By law, pet food manufacturers must label foods with
an ingredient list and guaranteed analysis of the foods
percentages of protein, fat, fiber, moisture, and nutritional
values. Though ingredients are listed by weight, keep an eye out
for ingredients that might be listed several different ways (for
example, wheat, which can be listed as flour, flakes, middlings, or
bran). Coming soon to big-box retail stores and veterinary
offices around the country, All American Pet Company has introduced
Grrr-nola, the first-ever multigrain bar meal replacement for dogs,
and Bow Wow Breakfast, a line of super premium breakfast food for
pooches. As Americans have become increasingly health conscious,
nutritional awareness should influence the food choices we make for
all our family members, pets included, says Mr. Schwartz. Visit
