Republican senators call for $1,000 tax on new EV sales to pay for road repairs
By: Reuters | February 12, 2025
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A group of Senate Republicans on Wednesday proposed a $1,000 tax on new electric vehicle purchases to account for the cost of federal road repairs.
Most revenue for federally funded road repairs is collected through taxes on diesel and gasoline, which EVs do not pay.
The one-time $1,000 fee charged at the time of purchase would be roughly equivalent to what drivers of conventional vehicles pay in federal gas taxes over 10 years for highway funds, said Senator Deb Fischer, the lead sponsor of the measure.
“EVs can weigh up to three times as much as gas-powered cars, creating more wear and tear on our roads and bridges. It’s only fair that they pay into the Highway Trust Fund just like other cars do," Fischer said, saying gasoline-vehicle users typically pay $87 to $100 annually to the trust fund.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said last month he thought EVs should pay for road use. "They should pay for use of our roads. How to do that, I think, is a little more challenging," said Duffy.
Some states charge fees for electric vehicles to cover road repair costs. Congress for the past three decades has opted not to hike fuel taxes to pay for rising road repair costs.
Since 2008, more than $275 billion -- including $118 billion from the 2021 infrastructure law -- has been shifted from the general fund to the Highway Trust Fund to pay for road repairs.
Congress is also considering eliminating the $7,500 EV tax credit, while the Trump administration has frozen EV charging funds and is moving to rescind aggressive emissions rules that the Biden administration estimated would force automakers to build a rising numbers of EVs to comply.
EVs still face hurdles among consumers including that they are typically more expensive than equivalent gasoline-powered versions.

Tesla implemented this little-known feature to make its cars even safer
Tesla’s description of the feature says:
“If you try to open a door while an approaching object is detected in your blind spot (e.g., a cyclist or other vehicle), the blind spot warning light will flash, an audio warning will sound, and the door will not open on the first press of the bottom. Wait, and then press the button again to override the warning.”

We have Waymo in our city. My son uses it often.
I am highly impressed watching them and at times I see 3 such cars at one crossing. They are all over the place and increasing.
Our city probably is the worst city for driverless automated cars. I have lived in several big cities around the world.
Our City is a curvy, hilly, has short-distance visibility all over, narrow lanes. Roads are in bad condition needing repair and maintenance. Pot holes, rough and uneven surface, broken or damaged from wear and tear.
I don't believe having an over-abundant records from around the world can help improve driverless cars. Why is Tesla taking decades? Is more data really going to help? I doubt it. We have been waiting now for too many years. We shall see.
We had one before (Cruze?) that failed and rejected by the city.
So far I personally observe these cars... and am greatly impressed how they navigate our compact and very challenging roads and terrible traffic

One needs to approach the likely bottom of Tesla share price in this case with some "tools", if any.
Assumptions usually are based on feelings and that is understandable.
Imo, the question at hand is not a simple one.
Technically, one can have an idea, but one can know looking back, at the bottom price.
Other than that, a winning guess is that of a Lotto winner. A lucky person.

Tesla’s revolutionary Matrix headlights are coming to the U.S.
"...The matrix headlights enable specific pixels in the LEDs to dim when other vehicles or off-road areas are detected, allowing them to remain super bright while effectively turning off for oncoming drivers or upcoming curves. Both Moravy and von Holzhausen go on to point out how the feature offers increased safety for both the driver, who will still be able to see using the mega-bright headlights, and drivers in oncoming traffic, who won’t be blinded by the headlights...."
