Shares of Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) have bucked the downward trend that has afflicted the rest of the market recently. While the broad consumer discretionary sector posted a loss of -15.29% over the past month — the worst among the S&P 500’s 11 sectors — Ford posted a gain of 2.48% over the same period. Ford slashes manager stock bonuses to cut costs, boost performance

DETROIT, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Some middle managers at Ford Motor (F.N), opens new tab will not get stock bonuses this year in what is seen internally as CEO Jim Farley's latest attempt to cut the automaker's bloated costs, according to six people familiar with the matter.
Around 1,650 middle managers out of 3,300 globally will not get stock bonuses, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
The stock awards are usually paid in March, but senior managers have been told to select which half of their middle management staff will receive them, four of the sources said.
Ford said the change was meant to incentivize an improvement in employee performance.
"We are focused on driving a high-performance culture that recognizes and rewards employees for their business contributions," a Ford spokesperson said.
The Dearborn, Michigan, automaker has struggled with inefficient operations, within both its cash-burning electric vehicle division and its fuel-powered vehicle business.
Farley has for years told employees and Wall Street that Ford is undergoing a fundamental transformation to become leaner and more competitive, as it races against U.S. rivals as well as Chinese automakers and EV producer Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab.
Ford's stock slipped about 23% over the past year, while Detroit rival General Motors' (GM.N), opens new tab shares rose around 23% on the strength of lower costs and higher profits.
The automaker and its competitors are also navigating the uncertainty of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies, which Farley said have added "a lot of cost and a lot of chaos." Ford's rivals are more exposed to tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which are scheduled to begin March 1, but the company could still be hit by 25% duties on vehicles shipped from Mexico, including its Mustang Mach-E, Bronco Sport, and Maverick pickup.
'THE BEST TALENT'
Employees were informed of the stock award changes in a company briefing last week and told the rationale for slashing bonuses was performance-based, the six sources said.
Some Ford workers viewed the move as a way for the automaker to slim its ranks, and said they were looking for job openings at other companies.
"With continued profit underperformance versus GM, Farley probably does not want to say the status quo of continued stock awards for all managers is acceptable," David Whiston, analyst for Morningstar, said in an email.
"This could be a way to get some people to quit given the focus is on middle managers," Whiston added.
Stock grant bonuses have typically been regarded as a way to retain talent at the automaker, which Farley recently said was key to its competitiveness. The awards vest over three years.
"The most important for me is the best talent and the best culture," Farley told analysts on an earnings call this month, saying the company could not improve its results without recruiting and keeping the right people.
The stock awards are part of a larger performance-based compensation system, which also includes cash awards. The bonuses are granted to salaried employees companywide, most of them managers.
Separately, Ford sets a companywide bonus based on metrics including vehicle quality, total earnings and EV sales, which amounted to 69% in 2024 of the total potential bonus, three of the sources said. Reuters reported in October that those bonuses would be cut based on lackluster company performance.

Huge Sell-Off Has Cut Ford Shares by Half

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) shares sold for about $25 apiece in early 2022. Recently, they dropped near their 52-week low of $9.10. What was a promising move into electric vehicles (EVs) has turned out to be multi-billion-dollar losses. Its sales and profits in China, the world’s largest car market, are shaky. CEO Jim Farley said, “So far, what we’re seeing is a lot of cost and a lot of chaos,” referring to tariffs and the new administration’s plans to help U.S. manufacturers.
Ford’s most recent challenges could substantially undermine its financial situation. According to S&P Global Mobility, tariffs on cars and car parts from Mexico and Canada could increase the prices of new vehicles in the United States by as much as 20%.
Ford will continue to post EV losses in 2025, which may be more than the $5.1 billion it lost last year. In 2021, Ford said it would spend over $30 billion on its EV development by 2025. In 2022, Ford said it expected to reach an annual rate of building EVs at 600,000 by late 2023. Last month, total Ford EV sales in the United States were 5,666.
Ford earned $600 million in China last year. However, Ford will be one of the companies hit hardest by Chinese competition. According to Bloomberg: “As the US and China square off over everything from tech to military might, Ford Motor Co. has emerged as the American firm most at risk from its exposure to the world’s No. 2 economy, according to Strategy Risks, beating the likes of Apple Inc. and Tesla Inc.”
Finally, Farley recently said that if inexpensive Chinese EVs entered the U.S. market, it would severely damage his company. He described Chinese car companies as an “existential threat.”
Ford is under siege. And escaping that position will be a monumental task.

Ford’s struggle to manage warranty expenses has been another sore spot for the automaker. Quality issues in several models from 2016-2021 have led to an $800 million increase in warranty costs. Though management intends to address these issues, they have communicated to shareholders that the problems may not be resolved for more than a year, at the very least. In other words, the warranty issues will cause a bearish overhang in the stock for the foreseeable future.

Shares of Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) are down 2.8% at $10.10 at last check today, after a downgrade from Jefferies to "underperform" from "hold." The firm cited, among other things, inventory build-up and an $8.5 billion gap between warranty provisions and cash outflows since 2020. Notably, the analyst kept a more favorable "hold" rating on sector peer General Motors (GM).
In other news today, the U.S. Energy Department finalized a $9.63 billion loan for Ford and South Korean battery maker SK On to construct three new battery manufacturing plants in Tennessee and Kentucky. The Biden administration is prioritizing incentivizing the electric vehicle (EV) sector before Trump's inauguration.
Today's drop has F trading at its lowest levels since August, and dropping below support at $10.30, which has provided a floor for the past few months. Since the start of the year, the equity is down roughly 16%.
Options traders appear to be buying in on the dip, however. So far today, 64,000 calls have been exchanged -- double the amount typically seen at this point -- in comparison to 32,000 puts. The December 10.50 call is the most active contract, followed by the 12 call in the same series.
It might not be a bad idea to bet on a short-term bounce, either. F's 14-day relative strength index (RSI) of 25.5 sits in "oversold" territory.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) CEO Jim Farley took over in October 2020. He has been a favorite of Executive Chair Bill (Willam Clay, Jr.) Ford. However, Bill has a habit of firing CEOs since he took over in 1999. He has gone through six since then, including when he took the CEO job. That means the tenure of the CEOs is four years. Star Alan Mulally lasted eight.
As Bloomberg reports, Ford has laid off 4,000 workers in Europe as its electric vehicle (EV) business there loses momentum. That adds to its deep trouble in the United States. While Bill Ford was partially responsible for the company’s horrible EV performance, most of it happened on Farley’s watch.
Ford originally said it would invest $30 billion into its EV business and produce 600,000 EVs by the end of 2023. That goal moved to 2024, but attaining it has become impossible. Ford has cut back production of its EV flagship, the F-150 Lightning. EV sales per month are extremely modest. This has happened as Tesla kept a huge lead in the U.S. EV sector.
Ford’s warranty issues may be just as big a problem as its EV sales. They have dragged earnings down by several hundred million dollars in the past two reported quarters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently fined Ford for one recall problem. Two more recall investigations then hit it. Farley has said, quarter after quarter, that the quality problem will get better.
Ford’s stock was about $8 a share when Farley took over. By January 2021, it had hit just over $10. Today, it is under $11. Farley is under a lot of pressure.

Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) stock is lower Tuesday, after the automobile manufacturer issued full-year guidance that was at the low end of its previous range, amid softening demand, rising inventory, and worries surrounding the viability of cost-cutting measures. Meanwhile, the company's third-quarter results were in line with expectations.
At last glance, F was down 9.7% at $10.27 to trade near a floor that saved its early September pullback. The equity is pacing for its worst single-session percentage loss since July, and is extending its year-to-date deficit to 13.4%.
Ford stock's options pits are brimming with activity. Already, 126,000 calls and 107,000 puts have traded hands, which is 10 times the average intraday volume. The most activity is taking place at the December 12 call, following by the 11 call from the same monthly series. Meanwhile, new positions are being sold to open at the weekly 11/1 10.50-strike call.
Analysts are also weighing in, with at least four price-target cuts rolling in before the open today. More bear notes could be on the way too, considering the 12-month average price target of $12.10 is a 17.8% premium to F's current perch.

Ford Stock Beaten Down Ahead of Earnings

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) announces earnings on October 28. Since the last time it announced quarterly figures, the stock has fallen 20%, while the S&P 500 is 5% higher. Shares of crosstown rival General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) have risen 14% over the period. Wall Street is not expecting a recovery from Ford’s previous quarterly report.
Ford’s shares dropped 13% when it missed forecasts for its second-quarter earnings. It did slightly better on the top line. Revenue was $44.81 billion, compared to a consensus estimate of $44.02 billion. However, per-share earnings figures were dismal at $0.47, compared to an expected $0.68.
The most significant disappointment was that the company’s warranty costs had risen $800 million from the previous quarter. Ford Chief Financial Officer John Lawler tried to be slightly optimistic, but it did not work: “We’re making real progress in raising quality, lowering costs and reducing complexity across our entire enterprise.”
Experts and the media have estimated that Ford loses $100,000 for every electric vehicle (EV) it sells. After announcing that it would invest $30 billion in EVs, Ford has retreated, particularly because of sales of its EV flagships, the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E.
Of the 27 analysts that cover the stock, according to Yahoo Finance, 16 rate it a Hold and three rate it Underperform or Sell. The consensus price target is $12.15, against a current price of $11.06. Analysts are pessimistic, and the stock sales point that way.

Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford’s Americas & International Markets Group, commented at the time, “With nearly 200,000 reservations, our teams are working hard and creatively to break production constraints to get more F-150 Lightning trucks into the hands of our customers.” Today, Ford sells a few of the pickups a month. By late last year, it had cut that delivery forecast to 1,600 a week for 2024.
The second thing was warranty problems. Ford’s latest earnings announcement included a jump in warranty issues that caused a $800 billion increase. The company had promised better numbers and a large increase in quality after years in which consumers and investors waited.
Ford is a good example of how investors become disappointed in results that management keeps promising and then misses.

Volkswagen posted similar warnings recently. The Stellantis news dragged its stock down 13%. Shares of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), a direct competitor to Stellantis, immediately dropped almost 3%. That means Ford’s stock has fallen about 14% this year.
Daunting Challenges
According to Reuters, Stellantis management said it would burn through $5 billion to $11 billion this year. Previously, it forecasted it would be cash-positive. Costs to revive its U.S. sales and competition from China were listed as causes.
The challenge faced by global car companies in China is staggering. International manufacturers, including Stellantis, are losing market share inside China. Today, it has a market share of only 1% of the world’s largest car market. Ford’s figure has also fallen recently. Among the reasons is the rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in China. Local manufacturers like BYD dominate the sector.
Over time, the second and more daunting challenge is that Chinese car companies have started exporting EVs. China EVs can have price tags as low as $15,000. Legacy car companies and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) have yet to produce EVs from which they can profit at a $25,000 MSRP. Tesla plans to introduce a new model with a price close to that. The only reason Chinese car companies do not compete in Europe and the United States is high tariffs. It is impossible to determine how long those will last.
Costs are another reason Stellantis says its financials have weakened. This has also been a challenge across the industry. Volkswagen may close plants in Germany for the first time in its history. Ford recently said a new UAW contract would cost it $8.8 billion.
Ford investors have watched as its competition cut forecasts. Wall Street is worried Ford will be the next to disappoint the market.
