Peru Copper secures water rights for Toromocho Project

VANCOUVER, May 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Peru Copper Inc.
(TSX:PCR/AMEX:CUP/BVL:CUP) ("Peru Copper" or the "Company") is
pleased to announce that the Government of Peru has issued a
Supreme Decree securing water rights for the Company's Toromocho
Project located in Peru. The Supreme Decree (No. 027-2006-AG)
reserves for the Company underground water rights for up to 1.1
cubic meters per second, or 34.7 million cubic meters per year. The
amount of water reserved is estimated to be sufficient for a
150,000 tonnes per day mining and milling operation at the
Company's Toromocho Project as contemplated in the Company's
Prefeasibility Study. The Company will now proceed to make
application for a water usage license from authorities in Peru. J.
David Lowell, the Company's Executive Chairman, said, "We are
extremely pleased to have secured the water rights for the
Toromocho Project. This is another important milestone that
continues our fast track towards the development of the Project."
Peru Copper is involved in the acquisition and exploration of
potentially mineable deposits of copper in Peru. On June 11, 2003,
Peru Copper entered into the Toromocho Option Agreement ("Toromocho
Option") with Empresa Minera del Centro del Peru S.A.
("Centromin"), a Peruvian state-owned mining company, whereby
Centromin granted the Company the option to acquire its interest in
the mining concessions and related assets of the Toromocho Project.
