Dorset Police select Motorola TETRA portable and mobile radios Basingstoke, UK, October 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola Commercial Government, and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS) today announced that Dorset Police have chosen a full Motorola solution for their officers when they go live on the UK Airwave Network early 2004. The radios will be deployed by NTL on behalf of Dorset Police as their managed service provider. In addition to using Motorola MTM700 mobile radios, Dorset's officers also will be using Motorola's newest TETRA handportable, the MTH650. Their choice of portable was made after an exhaustive user assessment carried out with a representative working group of users from all disciplines and departments within the Force. As Terry McKevitt, Airwave Project Manager for Dorset Police, commented, "The outcome of this evaluation was a clear preference for the Motorola MTH650, which appeared to match or exceed the competition in virtually all areas and scored highest on all the high-level considerations by the evaluation team." Richard Grant, Strategy Development Manager in NTL's Public Safety group, added, "After a thorough product assessment process, including both the technical and operational requirements specified by Dorset Police, NTL is confident that Motorola will provide a high-quality solution." Decisive factors in the choice of handportable Following extensive research with public safety users, Motorola designed the MTH650 to incorporate a number of critical user requirements including the flexibility to wear the terminal higher up on a uniform as well as on the belt, which was a key factor in Dorset's selection process. The MTH650's weight and size also made it ideal for portage on a uniform at chest height. Recognising this trend with officers, Motorola's MTH650 also offers a range of additional special features such as dual microphones to ensure clear reception of the user's voice and an invert display function to make using the radio extremely easy to view when tilted if worn on the chest. In addition, the combined rotary volume and talk-group control brought the two most frequently used functions together in a single control. Tests by the Dorset Airwave team also gave the Force a high level of confidence in the performance of Motorola terminals in areas of marginal coverage. Mobiles as well as portables The selection of Motorola MTM700 mobiles also was influenced by a number of factors. Key amongst these was the similar functionality and user interface between the mobile and portable. According to Dorset Police, this will help minimise training costs and reduce risks of user error. In addition, given the lack of space in the dash of most vehicles, they felt the "all up front" DIN slot installation would vastly reduce fitting/replacement time and cost and the consequent overheads in vehicle availability. The MTH650 Motorola TETRA hand portable is proving to be a huge success. Dorset Police are one of eight public safety forces who have selected the MTH650 in the UK alone, and the campaign for tenders continues. The product is available globally to all markets that use TETRA and has been designed with the requirements of those countries in mind. Motorola has been awarded more than 90 TETRA contracts in more than 35 countries and is a founder member of the TETRA Association.
