New National Infrastructure Deal With Fibernet Group plc
Internet Technology Group plc ("ITG"), the largest independent
Internet Service Provider ("ISP") in the UK, announces that its
subsidiary, GX Networks, has entered into an agreement with
Fibernet Group plc ("Fibernet") to develop its national
networking capability, thereby supporting its expanding corporate
business.
GX Networks, the business connectivity division of ITG, announced
today that it has entered into an agreement to use Fibernet's UK
network to extend its national infrastructure. The agreement
will be for an initial period of three years and will give GX
Networks access to a national network with three Super Points of
Presence ("POPs") and access to a further 30 POPs through
Fibernet's existing SDH network. The network covers all the
major cities in the UK and extends as far north as Glasgow and
Edinburgh. This agreement, combined with existing arrangements
with other infrastructure suppliers, will provide GX Networks
with a total of 400MB of infrastructure capacity around the UK.
The agreement with Fibernet will give GX Networks access to a
national network at a significantly lower cost. By entering into
this agreement, GX Networks will become one of the first business
ISPs to be able to offer a national service to corporate
customers throughout the UK on increasingly competitive terms.
This agreement with Fibernet follows ITG's announcements earlier
this year to overhaul its infrastructure through the acquisition
of a 155MB transatlantic connection and of the agreement with
Cisco to use Cisco's new technology as the basis for ITG's
technical infrastructure. All of these developments demonstrate
ITG's determination to enhance the quality and range of its
infrastructure, while at the same time reducing its overall cost
base.
Maria Cappella, General Manager of GX Networks, said today:
"With this new capacity from Fibernet, we will now be able to
deliver our services to many new customer sites at increasingly
competitive prices."
Charles McGregor, Chief Executive of Fibernet, added:
"GX Networks are now clearly a leading player in terms of their
infrastructure. We are delighted to be doing business with an
ISP that has such an excellent technical reputation."
Laurence Blackall, Chief Executive of ITG, said:
"This is the third phase of our infrastructure expansion. Our
substantial international bandwidth is in place, as too is our
Cisco dial platform. The company is now ideally placed to focus
on the extremely valuable corporate market. Recent initiatives
to offer cheap or free Internet access to the consumer will force
business customers to adapt ever improving connectivity services;
we have already seen a significant surge in enquiries from
companies anxious to expand their Internet business. Our
positioning and timing have been ideal."
