Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY), an industry leader in delivering enterprise and mobile software, today announced an initiative targeting developers that will enable enterprises to take advantage of the benefits of the cloud computing model to develop, test and deploy various classes of applications including transactional, analytics and mobile applications using Sybase server infrastructure.

Sybase is enabling developers to extend their existing software development environments onto public cloud computing environments such as the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). In addition, Sybase is working with hardware and software industry leaders to integrate and optimize server, storage and I/O virtualization that will enable organizations to fully exploit both public and private cloud environments and realize the benefits of lower cost, ease of development and faster time-to-market.

Sybases ability to deliver flexible software solutions and infrastructure as business needs evolve has been one of the central themes of our Unwired Enterprise vision, said Dr. Raj Nathan, Chief Marketing Officer, Sybase. Our cloud computing initiative provides customers with yet another enterprise-ready approach to data management, complex analytics and data mobility, enabling business-critical information to be delivered anytime and anywhere.

To accelerate the adoption of enterprise class public cloud computing environments, Sybase is working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., to enable customers to utilize Sybase software in Amazon EC2 environments. To allow developers to quickly extend their development environments to Amazon, Sybase plans to make Amazon Machine Images (AMI), developer guides and developer software for its server products freely available for development and testing. By supporting AWS, Sybase will enable application migration between public and private clouds to help meet service level agreement (SLA) requirements. In addition, by working with Amazon, Sybase plans to establish flexible utility computing pricing models of its software to enable pay-per-use billing. As a specialized talent and consulting firm with offices worldwide, Aquent uses Sybase products including Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise, Replication Server and Sybase IQ. Aquent expects to benefit in several ways from cloud computing.

As we extend our business into new areas and geographies, we continue to examine ways to easily increase the flexibility and scalability of our enterprise systems, said Larry Bolick, CIO, Aquent. Were expecting to reap some key benefits from a Sybase cloud computing environment such as reduced network latency, improved application performance for our user community, and scalability without the need to extend our own infrastructure.

In addition to addressing the developers needs for enhanced productivity, Sybase recognizes the enterprise requirement to integrate database workloads with server and storage virtualization on private cloud environments to gain greater resource utilization. To maintain enterprise service-levels through this adoption, Sybase is committed to work with key technology vendors in server and storage virtualization. As part of its overall strategy, Sybase is working with vendors including Symantec and its Veritas Storage Foundation to optimize Sybase's Virtualized Resource ManagementTM (VRM) technology framework found in ASE Cluster Edition for this storage environment to build robust and reliable cloud computing environments.

We are pleased to be working with Sybase on an integrated solution that extends Sybases unique workload management VRM technology to a private cloud environment through support of Veritas Storage Foundation. This solution will offer customers significant advantages in storage management, application availability and performance, said Josh Kahn, vice president of product management at Symantec.
