Meta seeks nuclear power developers for reactors to start in early 2030s
By Timothy Gardner
December 3, 20244:20 PM MSTUpdated 14 hours
WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Meta (META.O), opens new tab said on Tuesday it is seeking proposals from nuclear power developers to help meet its artificial intelligence and environment goals, becoming the latest big tech company to take interest in atomic power amid an expected boom in electricity demand.
The company wants to add 1 to 4 gigawatts of new U.S. nuclear generation capacity starting in the early 2030s, it said in a release. A typical U.S. nuclear plant has a capacity of about 1 gigawatt.
"At Meta, we believe nuclear energy will play a pivotal role in the transition to a cleaner, more reliable, and diversified electric grid," the company said in a release.
U.S. data center power use is expected to roughly triple between 2023 and 2030 and will require about 47 gigawatts of new generation capacity, according to Goldman Sachs estimates.
But it will be tough to swiftly meet soaring power demand with nuclear reactors, as companies face an overburdened U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, potential uranium fuel supply obstacles and local opposition.
Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab and Constellation Energy (CEG.O), opens new tab announced a deal in September to restart a unit at the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania in what would be the first-ever restart for a data center.
That announcement followed a similar agreement in March in which Amazon.com (AMZN.O), opens new tab, purchased a nuclear-powered data center from Talen Energy (TLN.O), opens new tab.
Meta said it is seeking developers with expertise in community engagement, development and permitting, and would consider either small modular reactors, an emerging part of the business that is not yet commercial, or larger nuclear reactors similar to today's fleet of U.S. nuclear plants.
Meta said it will take submissions from developers that want to take part in the request for proposals until Feb. 7, 2025.
The company said it was using the request-for-proposal process because, compared to renewable energy projects like solar and wind, nuclear is more capital-intensive, takes longer to develop, and is subject to more regulatory requirements.
"An RFP process will allow us to approach these projects thoroughly and thoughtfully with these considerations in mind," it said.
Let's see if NuScale benefits.
Best of luck with your investments.

NuScale on White House Announcement
Shares of NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR), a developmental-stage maker of small modular reactors, initially popped this morning on an announcement from the White House on expanding nuclear energy production.
While the stock jumped as much as 13% in morning trading, it gave back those gains amid a broader pullback in small-cap stocks in a sign that the boom from Trump's election was fading.
The new plan from the White House aims to triple nuclear energy production by 2050, and the plan is supportive of small modular reactors (SMRs), which it said have "strong potential for both grid-based and behind-the-meter resilient electricity."
It also name-checked NuScale's VOYGR power modules, and the plan aims to deploy $900 million for new SMR deployments, some of which could go directly to NuScale.
The Trump administration is expected to be favorable to nuclear power, including SMRs like the kind NuScale is focused on building.

Two main takeaways from yesterday's CC
* Proceeding with Fluor’s Phase 2 Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED Phase 2) study for the RoPower Doice?ti small modular reactor (SMR) power plant
* Supply chain partner Doosan Enerbility making progress producing the first NuScale Power Modules™
And still on track for the 77 MWe module approval mid-year. The cash position looks steady.
The start around AI, energy independence, etc., sounded like a sales pitch as opposed to real info, surfing on recent announcements and the election results.
The two slides with some actual substance:
*Slide 6:
RoPower Project Progressing
▪ In 3Q’24, RoPower authorized the Front-End Engineering and Design Phase 2 (“FEED Phase 2”) project for its
Doice?ti small modular reactor power plant to proceed under contract with Fluor Corporation
▪ NuScale executed revenue-generating agreements with RoPower and Fluor in relation to the advancement of Doice?ti
project FEED Phase 2
▪ FEED Phase 2 work began on September 30th and the expected duration is 12-14 months
▪ RoPower targets 462 MW installed capacity, using six NuScale Power Modules at the former Doice?ti coal plant site
and slide 10 (production here means being produced, not being operated):
The Only U.S. NRC-Approved Small Modular Reactor in Production
Today's market reaction seems to indicate I'm not the only one to be optimistic about NuScale after the CC.
Best of luck with your investments!

Kairos Power, mentioned in the article, is a competitor of NuScale Power.
Kairos is a private company so no shares are available to buy in the market. If it weren't so I would certainly be a shareholder already.
But I do own shares in NuScale Power. IMO, the only other SMR stock play that might be a good investment play longer term is OKLO, Inc. Sam Altman of OpenAI and ChatGPT is heavily involved.
In terms of actually installing a workable SMR, NuScale appear to be at least two years ahead of OKLO. However, I will probably buy some OKLO at some point.
NuScale Power (SMR) shares are just a couple of bucks more expensive than OKLO. So I own NuScale and no OKLO.
All just my opinion...

CNBC: Small nuclear reactors could power the future — the challenge is building the first one in the U.S.
https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/07/how-small-modular-reactors-could-expand-nuclear-power-in-the-us.html
Dominion is currently evaluating whether it makes sense to build a small modular reactor at its North Anna nuclear station in Louisa County, Virginia, northwest of Richmond. The utility’s service area includes the largest data center market in the world in Loudoun County, less than 100 miles north of the plant.
Electricity demand from these computer server warehouses is expected to surge because artificial intelligence consumes more energy. In the case of Dominion, the peak power demand from data centers is forecast to more than double to 6.4 gigawatts by 2030 and quadruple to 13.4 gigawatts in 2038.
Dominion asked SMR technology companies in July to submit proposals evaluating the feasibility of developing a small reactor at North Anna. Carr said interest in the proposal process has been high. The utility is currently working with vendors to make sure they understand Dominion’s needs and to figure out which technology might be suitable, Carr said.

What is an E2 Center?
The Energy Exploration (E2) Center is an innovative learning environment that offers users a hands-on opportunity to apply nuclear science and engineering principles through simulated, real-world nuclear power plant operation scenarios.
https://www.nuscalepower.com/en/products/e2-centers
How the E2 Center Works
Using state-of-the-art computer modeling within a VOYGR™-12 power plant control room simulator, the E2 Center allows users to assume the role of control room operator. Workstation interfaces allow control room operators to:
Input a set of parameters
Run a variety of simulated scenarios
Observe the plant’s response to these inputs
Each workstation is able to view the status of any of the 12 units within the model.
E2 Center Features
Several innovative features incorporated into the E2 Center simulator are unique to our control room design. These features allow users to engage in hands-on learning about human factors engineering, human-system interface design, advanced diagnostics, control room automation, integrated nuclear plant operation, and more.
