During his service, Col. Barr named his B-17G bomber “Southern Comfort” in hopes the company would send his crew a case of the spirit. In October of this year, Col. Barr’s daughter wrote to Brown-Forman – the company that owns Southern Comfort – requesting a special bottle for her father. The request was brought to BRAVE’s attention as their mission is to recognize and support active and retired military personal. The membership of BRAVE unanimously voted to honor Col. Barr. 70 years later, the request was finally fulfilled on Wednesday morning, when he received a specialty case of Southern Comfort.

Prior to the presentation of the case, he was presented with a model replica “Southern Comfort” B-17G bomber, a personalized frame honoring him and his crew with photos and a plaque, and an authentic USAF bomber jacket where an image of his “Southern Comfort” bomber was painted on the back. In addition, 12 of his family members were in attendance for this special day.

Various speakers provided remarks throughout the ceremony including museum personal, BRAVE representative, Rick Bubenhofer, Brown-Forman’s Director of Military and Transportation, Joe Bollinger and Colonel Barr himself. In addition, the honor guard from Peterson Air Force base presented the colors at the beginning of the ceremony in traditional USAF fashion.

70 years later, Colonel Barr was pleased to finally receive a case of his favorite spirit, Southern Comfort, the brand name that holds a special place in his heart. Throughout the ceremony, Colonel Barr reminisced to the audience about his time during the Air Force, making sure all in attendance knew just how much the military means to him. “If anyone here is young enough to join the military, think it over. It’s a good ride. And you’re not only doing something for yourself, you’re doing something for your country.”
