IH Market News Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) plans to significantly broaden Jeep’s European portfolio by the end of the decade, with the brand targeting a six-model lineup by 2030. The expansion will include a new large SUV developed with Chinese partner Dongfeng, alongside two additional compact SUVs, as the automaker strengthens its electrified offering across Europe. Electrification remains central to Jeep’s strategy The move reinforces Jeep’s position as one of Stellantis’ priority global brands and reflects the group’s long-term investment strategy for the European market. Recognised globally for its off-road heritage, Jeep continues to position itself as a premium marque in Europe. Under Stellantis’ 2030 business plan, unveiled last month, Jeep was identified as one of four global brands set to receive the largest share of future investment. Fabio Catone, Jeep’s Head of Europe, said the brand’s European range will consist of vehicles offering multiple powertrain options by 2030, including hybrid and fully electric models, with all-wheel drive available across the lineup. The electric-only, all-wheel-drive Recon off-road vehicle is scheduled to launch early next year. New SUV to be developed with Dongfeng Catone said the forthcoming D-segment SUV, which will be manufactured in China, will be a “truly full-fledged” Jeep and will be marketed in both China and Europe, with additional international markets also under consideration. Fabio Carli, Jeep’s European Product Marketing Manager, said the company had been assessing how best to enter a market segment where Jeep has had only a limited presence, adding that “the best way” to achieve this was through Stellantis’ long-standing partnership with Dongfeng. Last month, Stellantis and Dongfeng announced a US$1.2 billion agreement to manufacture Jeep and Peugeot vehicles in China. The deal forms part of Stellantis’ broader partnership strategy, which also includes manufacturing collaborations with Dongfeng and Leapmotor in Europe. Carli added that the new SUV will use a platform jointly developed with Dongfeng, stating: “This is absolutely not a rebadge… it is a project clearly developed in partnership, therefore with a strong presence of Stellantis as well.” Two additional compact SUVs planned Jeep also intends to introduce two B-segment SUVs before 2030, including a compact model and a larger variant, both based on Stellantis’ STLA One platform. While Catone did not provide launch dates for the new models, he confirmed that several introductions are planned before the end of the decade. The current European range includes the Avenger compact SUV and the recently launched Compass, which competes in the C-segment. Catone also said Stellantis is continuing to evaluate a next-generation version of the Wrangler for Europe, despite the model currently falling outside the company’s plans because of the region’s CO2 emissions regulations. “We’re continuing to work on it, but until we have it 100% in hand, we’ve decided not to include it,” he said. IH Market News Stellantis Underperforms European Auto Market in May Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) experienced a slowdown in European vehicle sales during May, ending a period of stronger growth and trailing the broader market’s performance. In the European Union, vehicle registrations fell 2.6% year-on-year to 146,381 units, while the group’s market share declined to 15.3% from 16.2% a year earlier. The weaker performance contrasted with overall growth in the European automotive market, which continued to expand during the month. Market Share Eases Across Wider Europe Across the broader European region, including the EU, EFTA countries and the United Kingdom, Stellantis registrations decreased 2.3% compared with May 2025. Market share slipped to 14.3% from 15.2% in the same period last year. Despite the decline, Stellantis maintained its position as Europe’s second-largest automotive group, behind Volkswagen, which held a 26.1% market share, and ahead of Renault with 9.6%. Year-to-Date Performance Remains Positive Although May proved challenging, Stellantis continued to post growth over the first five months of 2026. The company registered 905,444 vehicles across Europe during the period, representing a 5.5% increase from a year earlier. Its regional market share edged up to 15.5% from 15.4%. Within the European Union, registrations rose 5.7% year-on-year to 794,708 vehicles, lifting market share to 16.7% from 16.5%. Several Core Brands Record Declines A number of Stellantis brands reported lower sales during May. Peugeot registrations fell 12.6% to 50,277 units, while Opel/Vauxhall declined 6.3% to 36,291 vehicles. Jeep deliveries dropped 11.1% to 10,324 units, Alfa Romeo fell 23.9% to 3,759 units and DS registrations declined 31.4% to 1,883 vehicles. Lancia proved relatively resilient, with registrations slipping just 0.9% compared with the previous year. Leapmotor Continues Rapid Expansion One of the strongest performers within Stellantis’ portfolio was Chinese electric vehicle brand Leapmotor (USOTC:ZJLMF), which is distributed in Europe through the group. Across the EU, EFTA and UK markets, Leapmotor registrations surged 465.1% year-on-year in May to 9,945 units. For the first five months of 2026, registrations climbed 552.9% to 43,037 vehicles. Within the European Union alone, May registrations increased 447.3% to 8,856 units, while year-to-date volumes rose 530.8% to 37,694 vehicles. European Auto Market Continues to Expand The broader European automotive market remained resilient during May. New vehicle registrations in the European Union increased 3.2% year-on-year to 955,013 units. Including EFTA countries and the UK, total sales rose 3.6%. Since the beginning of the year, registrations across Europe have grown 4%, exceeding 4.7 million vehicles, while Western European sales have increased 4.5% to more than 5.8 million units. Mixed Performance Across Major Markets Among the region’s largest automotive markets, Italy delivered the strongest monthly growth, with registrations increasing 7.5%. France posted a 3.7% rise, while Germany remained broadly unchanged with growth of 0.1%. Spain, which had recorded strong gains in previous months, saw registrations decline 0.8%. Electric Vehicles Continue to Gain Ground The European market continued its transition toward electrified vehicles. Fully electric vehicle registrations in the EU increased 42.9% year-on-year, reaching approximately 203,000 units. Plug-in hybrid sales rose 12.2%, while hybrid electric vehicles recorded growth of 9.7%. By contrast, traditional combustion-engine vehicles continued to lose ground, with petrol car registrations falling 20.1% and diesel vehicles declining 19%. Tesla and BYD Deliver Strong Growth Competition within the electric vehicle market remained intense. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) reported a 152.4% increase in European registrations to 21,767 vehicles, lifting its market share to 2.3%. Chinese manufacturer BYD (USOTC:BYDDY) also continued its rapid expansion, with registrations rising 158.8% to 26,017 units and market share increasing to 2.7%. The strong performance of both companies highlights the growing influence of electric vehicle manufacturers as European consumers increasingly shift toward electrified mobility solutions. Stellantis shares fell to a record low in March this year.According to Reuters, the world’s fourth-largest carmaker by sales is expected to prioritise investment around four core brands while also pursuing additional joint ventures with Chinese manufacturers to better utilise production capacity and lower costs.“They just need their North American business to function. Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) shares declined more than 6% on the Italian stock market on Thursday after the automaker posted a return to profitability in the first quarter of 2026, though analysts at Jefferies said a tariff-related accounting adjustment masked underlying weakness in North America — a key region for the company’s recovery strategy.Adjusted operating income came in at €960 million, representing a 2.5% margin and exceeding analyst expectations of €696 million and a 1.8% margin.However, Jefferies highlighted an estimated €400 million IEEPA tariff adjustment included in North American results. Excluding this factor would bring adjusted operating income down to roughly €560 million, or a 1.2% margin, falling short of consensus forecasts.“NA missed headline, and to a greater extent excl IEEPA, with mix and cost possibly looking weaker than expected,” Jefferies analysts said.
Revenue growth offsets mixed regional performance
Net revenues increased 6% year over year to €38.13 billion, outperforming expectations of 4.7% growth, supported by higher volumes across all regions. Net profit reached €377 million, compared with a loss of €387 million in the same period last year.North America generated €16.11 billion in revenue, the largest contribution among segments, and delivered adjusted operating income of €263 million at a 1.6% margin, compared with a €542 million loss a year earlier. Shipments rose 17% to 379,000 units, driven by models such as the Ram 1500, the updated Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and the newly launched Jeep Cherokee.
Europe weak as pricing pressure weighs
In Enlarged Europe, adjusted operating income totaled just €8 million on revenues of €14.38 billion, equating to a margin of 0.1%, down from 2.1% a year earlier. Performance was impacted by negative pricing trends and an unfavorable product mix.Jefferies described the region as “a small beat with moving parts roughly as expected,” while noting that pricing pressure remains the primary challenge.South America delivered adjusted operating income of €393 million with a 10.8% margin, while the Middle East and Africa contributed €282 million at an 11.8% margin. Asia Pacific reported a loss of €30 million.
Cash flow improves but misses expectations
Industrial free cash flow was negative €1.92 billion, an improvement of 37% compared to the prior year but below the Jefferies estimate of negative €1.2 billion, due to higher-than-expected working capital outflows.The quarter included around €700 million in cash outflows related to charges recorded in the second half of 2025. Capital expenditure declined by €800 million year over year to €1.62 billion.Industrial liquidity stood at €44.14 billion as of March 31, 2026, representing 28% of trailing 12-month revenue, within the company’s target range of 25% to 30%.
Guidance maintained with lower tariff assumptions
Stellantis reiterated its full-year 2026 outlook, projecting mid-single-digit revenue growth, a low-single-digit adjusted operating margin, and improved industrial free cash flow year over year.
