Important Landscapes and Waterways ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 11
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today a group of diverse partners,
including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Conservation Fund
and Centex Homes (NYSE:CTX), joined together with the local
community to enhance and expand recreation opportunities at Prime
Hook National Wildlife Refuge at Delaware Bay. Over the next two
days, the volunteers, including local employees from Centex Homes,
will build a new handicapped accessible observation tower at Fowler
Beach. The skilled group will also create a 200- foot section of
raised boardwalk, which will include two bridges within the refuge
public use area and connect five existing trails at Prime Hook into
one loop. Once connected, this six-mile trail will become one of
Sussex County's most popular walking destinations, according to
Jonathan Schafler, refuge manager. "Supporting the protection of
the Delaware Bay watershed is part of our company-wide commitment
to balance land conservation with responsible development," said
Karin Silver, division manager of Centex Homes' Eastern Shore D.C.
Metro Division. "Our local employees and vendors are excited to be
part of a volunteer project that will bring visitors closer to
nature." Prime Hook NWR represents one of the nation's premiere
examples of freshwater marsh left in the United States. It's
10,000-plus acres offer a unique opportunity to see nature at its
finest and provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including
millions of migrating birds such as the red knot, ruddy turnstone
and sandpiper. "This project demonstrates the true power of
partnerships," said Blaine Phillips, mid-Atlantic director of The
Conservation Fund. "Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is one of
the world's premier birding-watching destinations. This effort will
enable current and future generations to experience the area's
magnificent natural wonders. We offer a special 'thanks' to Centex
Homes for its generous donation of financial support and skilled
labor." This effort is part of Centex Homes' ongoing commitment to
conservation and community. To date, Centex Homes has donated more
than $5 million for land conservation efforts across the country.
The newly established Centex Homes Land Legacy Fund, a relationship
with The Conservation Fund, has already provided support for the
protection of more than 5,000 acres throughout the country,
including critical land in the Delaware Bay watershed. "In these
challenging economic times we depend more than ever on the
creativity and commitment of conservation champions," added
Phillips. "The Conservation Fund applauds Centex Homes for
continuing its commitment to land and water conservation through
its Land Legacy Fund, which helps to protect the best of our
nation's outdoor heritage." About Centex Dallas-based Centex,
