The SAM figure is likely derived mostly from LightCounting's reports. A couple years ago, a LightCounting report separated out PIC sales by material type and "TFLN and other" had its own category. I don't recall exactly off the top of my head, but I think it was estimated to be around $1.5 billion in 2028.

LWLG is not just supplying Perkinamine. Besides material and material IP, they are also supplying IP for the device design, processing, encapsulation, and packaging.

What is the royalty per modulator? That's the billion dollar question. I'd probably expect royalties to be paid per PIC and not just per modulator, even though the calculations may effectively be the same. LWLG's modulators will be in 1.6T and 3.2T configurations. One chip with 4-8 modulators depending on flavor. It sounds like LWLG's lead Tier 1 customer is starting with 200G per lane applications.

I do agree that 40% of the SAM is unrealistic by 2028. Maybe 2029/2030 assuming execution through 2027 is perfect (and TFLN continues to struggle a bit) and true volume manufacturing starts next year and is ramping into the millions of units after 2027.

The royalty rate will increase as a % of the total Bill of Material as lane speeds increase. Besides the laser, the modulator is the primary optical component inside a transceiver. Next generation modulators that enable the use of simpler DSP and/or eliminate drivers, and provide lower power consumption will be able to capture more value in the BOM.

In terms of unit counts, LightCounting published updated information around OFC earlier this year and stated that by 2030, 100 million transceivers will be sold and half of them will use 400G per lane. 400G per lane is where LWLG's technology begins to have much clearer advantages. I believe the ramp for 400G/lane based devices ramps in 2027, initially lead by InP EML. While there is some very early prototyping of silicon only modulators for 400G per lane (Coherent's big OFC news), those devices are still comparatively very large and power hungry. I posted about it a few months ago, but during a Q&A at OFC the gentleman from Coherent painted a not-so-optimistic picture on their device despite the headlines it was receiving.

Right now, EO polymer is really the only option for enhancing silicon photonics. Micro transfer printing TFLN chips is being looked at, but I don't think I'd actually consider that silicon photonics. Some are trying to call it that. EO polymer is a truer method and can be applied in the foundry in the processing flows without getting too complicated. If you've been watching this company, you'll know that at some point this year LWLG should be transferring the majority of its back-end-of-line process (basically the polymer processing) to one of its foundry partners.

I'm not expecting $800 million in revenue any time soon. But considering the business model is extremely light on CAPEX and the cost of producing material is negligible...I believe the company can organically reach a valuation of many billions of dollars in relatively short order. It'll only take a few million units sold. If a few million units are being sold, that means large scale commercialization was successful and works...and if that's the case...they're going to sell way more than just a few million units. Of course before these sales, the market will see and absorb the news that indicates all of this is happening so it will get priced into the stock. That's what is going to continue to happen through the rest of 2026 and 2027.

1-2 more Stage 3's expected by end of Q3. There's another foundry yet to be revealed.

Already with three Fortune Global 500 companies. The largest in the industry with revenues of at least $32 billion per year. Could one be Google? Google recently mentioned organic modulators in a presentation about coherent-lite applications and oh look...LWLG just added coherent-lite as a product in its own presentation. Could one be Cisco? LWLG's former device lead is now a leader within Cisco's hardware engineering teams. Hm.

And it's longest running partner, Polariton, was just acquired by Marvell and now Marvell is mentioning plasmonics on the same stage where Jensen Huang is calling Marvell the next trillion dollar company.

Prototype_101 You made the same mistake that a lot of others make. LWLG isn't going to get 40% of SAM. The SAM they quoted is for POLYMER MODULATORS, not Perkinamine. How much is a modulator? How much royalty are they going to get PER MODULATOR for supplying Perkinamine? Your numbers are off by a couple of orders of magnitude imo.

Hey guys I'm new here and have been looking at LWLG for a while, but don't currently have a position. Has anyone here looked at the potential financials? I see the company says their "SAM" or "serviceable addressable market" is $2-4B for polymer modulators. I also know there's more than just LWLG in this market, NLM Photonics being another competitor. I also know there are already solutions shipping for $1.6T transceivers by LITE and COHR, to name two. AAOI is also sampling 1.6T and will be shipping in the next few months.

So with a $2-4B market, how much can modulators with LWLG technology capture? This is for MODULATORS, not bottles of Perkinamine. How much does a modulator chip sell for? What percentage of the price of a modulator might one layer of polymer fetch in terms of royalties? LWLG is an IP company and manufactures nothing on it's own, so it seems that new margins could be comparable to another IP company, ARM.

In the end, if and when LWLG technology is shipping in whatever volume they can capture, what is an estimated annual net profit? I have my own numbers for this but I wanted to see if anyone else has done this analysis since no analysts seem to follow it. Thanks.

After the 2008 reverse merger with Lumera, the company continued to operate as GigOptix. In April 2016, GigOptix acquired Magnum Semiconductor and rebranded itself to GigPeak, Inc... in 2017, GigPeak was acquired by Integrated Device Technology (IDT) and in 2019, IDT (and its GigPeak/GigOptix assets) was acquired by Renesas Electronics. Neither MaxLinear nor INPHI acquired GigOptix, nor was it a predecessor to IXYS.

INPHI was an independent optical semiconductor company that was ultimately acquired by Marvell Technology in 2021.

Lots of misinformation this afternoon (not that any of it means a darn thing anyway) but I want to clear up that to the best of my understanding and knowledge INPHI was not related in any corporate way or any other way to Lumera/Gigoptix/Gigpeak/.

Might want to try double checking and doing your own research before relying on AI.

INPHI/Marvell doesn't deserve being put in that boat.

Silly, in my prediction post – not the one later that you cited – when it was in the 3s said I expected it to reach $8 by mid year.

I also said any combination of some listed items could send it into double digits.

Anyway, you might wanna hope that it doesn’t under perform by June 30 and close UNDER $8, as it did last year when I predicted 1 to 4 dollars for the year and it ended up closing in the 3s after people like yourself were taunting my prediction when it was in the fives and sixes earlier

Lightwave has patents on both of them though.

The Reality: A foundry releases a Process Design Kit (PDK) as soon as a design is manufacturable in their factory. The recently released GDSFactory PDK for GlobalFoundries is meant for creating test chips (tape-outs) to validate performance. The foundry does not require a full GR-468 certification beforehand to be included in a PDK. The chips made with the PDK are the exact ones that must undergo those tests afterwards.

This earnings call summary is the clearest commercial evidence yet that the bull thesis remains on schedule. Polariton/Perkinamine is named on Marvell's Wall Street roadmap. The revenue targets for FY2028 are enormous. The TFLN competitive threat has been effectively dismissed by the acquirer under oath to analysts.
