➡️ Japan is estimated to be losing between $15 billion and $20 billion annually in tourism revenue compared to its pre-pandemic peak.
This shortfall is driven by:

fewer visitors from China (historically Japan’s largest tourism market)

slower recovery in business and conference travel

reduced long-haul travel from Europe

weaker spending per visitor in some regions

higher global travel costs

a strong yen at times reducing foreign purchasing power

Japan is attracting huge numbers of tourists again, but the highest-spending segments haven’t fully returned.

Why This Matters for Japan
Tourism is a major economic engine for Japan, supporting:

hotels, ryokan, and restaurants

airlines and rail networks (including the Shinkansen)

retail, especially luxury and electronics

cultural sites, temples, and museums

rural communities that rely heavily on seasonal visitors $FXY

Not good :(

I’d watch this like a hawk if Japan raises rates

I'd be careful about FXY guys if you were planning on using it as a Yen short. The sponsor has an ability to close the fund at any time, and should the yen have a dramatic decline, the fund could be liquidated before any USD:JPY 350 scenario materializes. I inquired about it to the sponsor and didn't receive a word back, but they have closed funds tied to other currencies before, and should the sponsor not be able to service the fees associated with the fund, I would imagine they'd have an incentive to liquidate. Yen shorts are tricky for retail, especially ones's tied to ETFs.

The Trust issues shares (the Shares) in blocks of 50,000 (a Basket) in exchange for deposits of Japanese Yen and distributes Japanese Yen in connection with the redemption of Baskets. The investment objective of the Trust is for the Shares to reflect the price of Japanese Yen. The Trust holds Japanese Yen and, from time to time, issues Baskets in exchange for deposits of Japanese Yen and distributes Japanese Yen in connection with redemptions of Baskets. The Sponsor of the Trust is Rydex Specialized Products LLC. The Sponsor of the Trust oversees the performance of the Trustee and the Trust’s principal service providers. The Bank of New York Mellon serves as the trustee.
