Lenovo’s $100 Billion Gambit
Yang Yuanqing built Lenovo into the world’s largest PC maker. His next target? Smartphones. Watch out Samsung, Apple.

China has such a short history of corporate entrepreneurship that outlandish goals don’t seem preposterous, and ambition never looks outsize. That is, perhaps, part of the reason that Yang Yuanqing, the Lenovo Group CEO who once delivered workstations by bicycle, was able to build the world’s largest PC manufacturer. It is also a good part of the reason why his designs on challenging Apple (ticker: AAPL) and Samsung Electronics (005930.Korea) to dominate the world of devices to connect to the Internet might succeed.

Yang, who recently turned 50, has built the world’s largest maker of personal computers and one of China’s most recognizable brands by forging into emerging markets and the Chinese hinterland, and selling ThinkPads, formerly IBM’s laptop brand, to companies all around the world. He’s not finished yet. This fall, Lenovo (992.Hong Kong), which is headquartered in Beijing and Morrisville, N.C., received approval from U.S. authorities to buy IBM ’s (IBM) X86 server operation for $2.1 billion and Google ’s (GOOGL) Motorola Mobility handset business for $2.9 billion. The two deals will increase the company’s revenue by $10 billion, to an estimated $57 billion next year. Lenovo’s goal is to reach $100 billion in sales, although so far there is no timetable in place.

“In a weird way, Yuanqing is almost made for this,” says Yahoo! (YHOO) co-founder Jerry Yang, who sits on Lenovo’s board. (They share the same last name but aren’t related.) “He’s been working his entire career to get to this point. China is probably very proud of Lenovo. But his ambition is to be not just a Chinese company, but a global company that’s headquartered in China.”

Lenovo and its CEO, who is known around the company as YY, have marched side by side almost from the start. Lenovo was founded in 1984 as a computer reseller by Liu Chuanzhi and 10 other engineers. They were funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which still owns 36% of Lenovo’s major shareholder, Legend Holdings. Five years later Yang, a graduate student in computer science, answered the company’s newspaper ad for a salesman. He began selling Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) workstations.

As Yang tells it, he did everything: “I introduced the product to the customer. When they decided to buy, I wrote the purchase order, took the money to the cashier, took the order to the warehouse to take the computer and test it, rode the bicycle to [bring the computer] to the customer’s office. If they had a problem they would call me to help them to fix it.”

His enthusiasm and smart choices in building the organization prompted Liu to name him the head of the PC unit, something Liu would later recall as “a risky decision.” At first it was tough. The supply chain was poorly managed and inventories were bloated. Yang ordered an information-technology system so that sales would know what was in inventory. And he introduced a sense of camaraderie, in part by ordering people to address managers, including himself, by their first names, not honorifics.

HE ALSO FIRED PEOPLE. Mary Ma, Lenovo’s former CFO, feared that the glass separating her office from Yang’s would shatter from all the dressing-downs. Older executives rebelled. Eventually, Liu came in and talked to each senior manager to express his support of Yang. Then he told Yang he could keep his job, but tone it down. A grateful Yang was nearly in tears, recalls Ma.

Through a spokesman, Liu, who retired as chairman of Lenovo in 2011, declined to be interviewed.

Yang kept going. Lenovo introduced its first laptop in 1996, and then began distributing IBM software in China. Yang dumped direct sales and used local distributors, and cut prices to just above cost. Lenovo became China’s largest PC manufacturer. And when it began facing flat growth in the early 2000s, under pressure from HP, IBM, and local brands, Yang, who was named CEO in 2001, decided it was time to make a bid for IBM’s PC division. The board was reluctant, but Yang persisted. In 2005, Lenovo purchased IBM’s PC operation for $1.75 billion, quadrupling the company’s sales overnight.

To persuade the board, Yang agreed to step aside as CEO, to give the company an American face. He moved into the chairman role, which Liu vacated.

The company’s first new CEO, a former IBM executive, was slow to cut costs and stepped down after a year. Next, Bill Amelio, a former Dell executive, clashed with Yang as they worked to reconcile the Lenovo culture with the old IBM culture and the Dell culture that Amelio brought with him.

Meanwhile, Lenovo’s consumer products proved a bust. Then came the financial crisis, and sales took a big hit. Amelio resigned, Yang returned to the CEO slot and Liu returned as chairman.

Once back, Yang cut the top management team from 17 to just nine. The managers met once a month in different locales around the world. He told the team to be frank with each other and respect each other. By this point, he had dropped the brute force, and was using nuance and persuasion. It was leadership by eventual consensus, which they called the Lenovo Way.

Aware of the varied backgrounds of his team and its challenges, Yang hired a director of diversity. He asked for an assessment by his direct reports and other key leaders, recalls Yolanda Conyers, vice president of global HR operations.

The team created an action plan dubbed Protect & Attack. Lenovo would protect cash-cow markets such as China, or premium ThinkPad sales to enterprises, and attack fast-growth geographies and new products. The company kept prices low, helped by the fact that it manufactured half of its goods in-house. Lenovo built distribution centers around the world. It began to scarf up market share. Last year, it became the largest PC manufacturer in the world, with nearly 20% of the market. “I realized YY and his team are a lot more flexible, pliable, and less dogmatic about strategy,” says Alberto Moel of Sanford C. Bernstein. “I didn’t appreciate how much management had learned from the [IBM] experience.”

With the world accessing information via mobile devices and the cloud, Yang decided in 2009 that Lenovo needed a new strategy: Though it was growing market share, PC sales were on the wane, and he figured growth in the PC business might last a few more years, tops. The next big milestone, says Yang, is to be No. 1 in devices that connect to the Internet, what he calls PC Plus. He invited Jerry Yang to join the board. The two dipped into their private wine cellars at a tasting for Silicon Valley luminaries including Google co-founder Larry Page and Tesla (TSLA) founder Elon Musk. Lenovo had arrived.

EVEN BEFORE THE MOTOROLA deal, Yang had huge ambitions. In China, Lenovo had become the second-largest smartphone vendor after Samsung, using the same strategy it had used with PCs—keeping manufacturing and R&D in-house, keeping prices affordable, putting out new models. Trouble was, it was tough to grow anywhere outside the emerging markets: Lenovo knew it could grow even faster if it bought another company. It passed on BlackBerry. In 2012, Google bought Motorola. Over dinner, Yang told Google CEO Eric Schmidt, “If you don’t want the hardware business, we’ll take it,” he said. A year later, he got a call from Schmidt. The Motorola deal gave Lenovo the same cachet and brand IBM gave them in PCs. A couple of years back, Yang set the seemingly impossible goal of selling 100 million smartphones and tablets worldwide in 2015. Now that looks possible.

The phone business is insanely competitive—last quarter, Xiaomi of China came out of nowhere to grab third place, displacing Lenovo. With the Motorola deal, however, Lenovo will return to a solid No. 3. It could manufacture in China, driving costs lower, and reintroduce the brand there.

At the same time, IBM was dumping its low-end server unit. Lenovo was already in servers and storage, and IBM’s so-called x86 operation, with $4.6 billion in 2013 revenue, was a commodity business that went head to head with HP and Dell. It was the kind of business Yang loved. He could reduce prices with Lenovo’s strong supply chain and keep a tight grip on costs. Lenovo could sell the servers to new customers.

“Servers went from being the bottom of the totem pole to being the highest-margin business at Lenovo. That mindset change has been an eye-opener for them,” says Gerry Smith, a former Dell executive who runs Lenovo’s enterprise unit. After the two deals, Lenovo has “a complete defined portfolio from high-mobility products to back-end infrastructure,” says Roger Kay, a consultant with Endpoint Technologies.

Yang is a ferociously hard worker, an ethic that is partly Chinese, and partly just Yang himself. For example, 10 years ago, Yang didn’t know English, so he moved his family to North Carolina after buying IBM’s PC division, studied with an English teacher, and watched a lot of cable news to grow familiar with idioms. Learning a foreign language requires one to be OK with making boneheaded mistakes and looking foolish. Today, Yang conducts interviews and gives speeches in fluent English.

Lenovo’s management team is close-knit and competitive. Among them are Liu Jun, who is quarterbacking the Motorola integration; Gianfranco Lanci, the former CEO of Acer (2353.Taiwan), who runs the PC business and business in mature markets; and Aymar de Lencquesaing, the former CEO of Packard Bell, who oversees emerging markets. They egg each other on. YY often calls suppliers and customers on their behalf and changes his travel schedule to accommodate them. When Gerry Smith, the former Dell exec, asked him to go to Latin America to meet customers and employees, Yang replied “Name the day.” They went two months later. Says Jerry Yang: “He’ll be the first to go and take the hill.”

YY doesn’t confine himself to dealing with just his top executives. He socializes with upper and mid-level managers and has given the cash portion of his bonus back to the rank and file for three years in a row. Last year, he distributed $3 million.

In fiscal 2015, which ends in March, Lenovo is expected to earn $818 million, or eight cents a share, on sales of $47 billion, versus $817 million a year earlier, on $39 billion. Earnings are likely to be under pressure for a couple of quarters as Lenovo digests the acquisitions. The shares, which trade in Hong Kong, recently fetched HK$10.88 a share, or 17 times this year’s expected earnings.

The addition of Motorola and IBM’s server business will bring the company closer to its goal of reaching $100 billion in sales. But that’s “just a number, given by my team,” Yang says. His ambition is bigger: “I want to build Lenovo into the most respected company in the world.”

Yang was born in the year of the Dragon—a sign that traditionally combines ambitiousness and tenacity. His parents were poor surgeons in Hefei province who often worked long hours. At the age of 10, he found himself cooking lunch over a coal stove for his two young siblings. “I’m the older son,” he said to himself. “I have to take care not just of myself, but also of my brother and sister.” Asked what the experience taught him, he grins. “Being persistent,” he says. “Persistence.”

Lenovo Wearable Devices Reportedly Enter Production Soon

Given that it has become sort of a trend these days to make wearable devices, it really doesn’t surprise anyone when another company jumps into the fray. Things are heating up in the wearable space as new smartwatches, fitness monitors and activity trackers are being introduced frequently. Lenovo seems to be thinking along the same lines. There’s a report saying that the company’s wearable devices are going to enter production very soon.
The report, which originates from China, says that China-based electronics manufacturer Fenda Technology has announced that it has been tapped by Lenovo as a supplier for its wearable devices. This means that a Lenovo wearable device is likely to enter mass production in the very near future.
The report also mentions that Fenda Technology declined to talk more about the details of this wearable device, so it can’t be said for sure right now what it might be. There is speculation though that it might be a smart wristband.
With the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 just around the corner there a huge possibility that Lenovo might show it off there. CES 2015 takes place between January 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pricing and release time frame will only be made public once the product has been formally shown off, so we’ll have to wait for over a month to find out if Lenovo really does have a wearable device up its sleeve.

New Moto G Leak: Motorola Adding Speed And 4G LTE To The Best Budget Smartphone

Following on from Motorola’s announcements of the new Moto X and Moto G handsets 2014 (and the Moto 360 smartwatch), the expectation has been that Motorola would be releasing an update to the Moto G 2014 edition to address the need for 4G in a number of territories.

Looking at the Moto G second edition handset recently here on Forbes, I labelled it as being ‘the number one smartphone‘:

I’m not saying that the Moto G is the perfect smartphone – too many people have their own favorite feature, so that’s an almost impossible target to hit. Neither am I saying that the Moto G will win in every single round of ‘specification Top Trumps’ because there are clearly phones with hardware numbers that are larger than the Moto G.

As an all-round handset, as the handset that is going to be rated as ‘above average’ and ‘exceeds expectations’ in almost every area, I cannot look past the Moto G in the current crop of smartphones.

That’s why I’m calling it the number one smartphone for 2014.

Hopefully the number one smartphone is about to get a little bit better, with the inclusion of 4G and an updated processor.

While Motorola has yet to announce the handset, online benchmarking results from Geekbench show a handset called ‘Motorola TBD’ in the list with specifications that would fit with an update to the 2014 Moto G. Specifically this TBD handset has a quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor and 1 GB of RAM. Between them these give a Geekbench score of 148, marginally higher than the first generation Moto G which clocks in with a score of 1142. It’s also worth nothing that the Snapdragon 410 is a 64-bit system.

In terms of operating system, the handset reports Android 4.4.4, although the expectation would be for the handset to ship, or to be upgraded over the air to Android 5.0 (Lollipop) after launch.

The first Moto G was released around seven months after the first Moto X handset (and picked up a slight specs upgrade three months after that). If Motorola were to follow that same plan, then this version of the Moto G wouldn’t be expected until late March 2015. That feels a little too far away for me, and it misses a number of important events that could drive awareness and adoption, such as Chinese New Year.

Given that benchmarks are appearing now, I’d expect the handset to show up sooner rather than later.


It would also represent the first Lenovo backed handset from Motorola Mobility, and the Chinese company will want to make a big impact with its first handset. The Moto G family is Motorola’s biggest selling smartphone, picking up critical acclaim and public acceptance. If the new handsets can gather sales to match the first handsets, that will provide a clear statement of intent on the future direction of Motorola in the hands of Lenovo.

Becomes World’s #3 Smartphone Maker; Prepares for Even More Growth

Motorola will retain over 2,000 patent assets and a large number of patent cross-license agreements, as well as the Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio.

The total purchase price at close was approximately US$2.91 billion (subject to certain post-close adjustments), including approximately US$660 million in cash and 519,107,215 newly issued ordinary shares of Lenovo stock, with an aggregate value of US$750 million, representing about 4.7 percent of Lenovo’s shares outstanding, which were transferred to Google at close. The remaining US$1.5 billion will be paid to Google by Lenovo in the form of a three-year promissory note. A separate cash compensation of approximately US$228 million was paid by Lenovo to Google primarily for the cash and working capital held by Motorola at the time of close.

The transaction has satisfied all regulatory requirements and customary closing conditions, including clearance by competition authorities in the U.S., China, EU, Brazil and Mexico, and by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). This is the fifth time since 2005 Lenovo has been cleared by CFIUS to acquire a U.S. business.

Lenovo adds ThinkCentre M83 Tiny to business desktop lineup
Summary: In addition to its new micro-sized PC, the world's largest computer supplier has also boosted its ThinkCentre E63z all-in-one with an Intel Core i3 processor.

Fresh off an encouraging research report that shows a 20-percent global market share for PCs, as well as a major launch of new Yoga tablets, Lenovo has announced a couple of updates to its business desktop lineup.

While hardly as sexy as Ashton Kutcher-shilled products, the company's ThinkCentre family forms the backbone of Lenovo's PC output, owing to the legacy of its IBM heritage. In addition to the traditional towers that have been occupying cubicles for decades, ThinkCentre has embraced the smaller form factors that have become increasingly trendy over the last few years. The "Tiny" version of the ThinkCentre M83 is the latest example of this less-is-more approach.

The M83 joins its M73 and M93 siblings in the Tiny family, though Lenovo's lack of full specs makes it difficult to determine how it's different from those other models. It certainly resembles them with dimensions that make it compact enough to be mounted onto the back of a monitor. Like the M73 Tiny and M93 Tiny, it also ships with Intel's fourth-generation Core processors (a.k.a. Haswell), and like the M93, it can drive up to three independent displays. Details on storage, RAM, etc. are unknown at the moment, but the M83 Tiny should handle up to 16GB of RAM and either a 2.5-inch hard drive or SSD.

And like those other Tiny Lenovos, the M83 has to deal with the heat that doesn't have a lot of room to escape. Enter Intelligent Cooling Engine (ICE) 3.0, the company's attempt to balance the temperature, noise, and performance levels of the Tiny systems via a pair of optimized settings. As with the M73 and M93, the M83 Tiny also includes PC Cloud Manager 2.0, which lets you access ICE and other system management tools.

The M83 Tiny will be available some time this month, though it's currently not listed on Lenovo's website. At a starting price of $599, it unsurprisingly sits between the M73 Tiny ($509.99 starting price) and the M83 Tiny ($649).

Along with the introduction of the M83 Tiny, Lenovo gave a shot in the arm to a desktop it announced several weeks ago. When the ThinkCentre E63z all-in-one was rolled out, an Intel Core i3 processor option was promised, but not immediately available. The system, sold by a few online retailers, shipped with a Pentium J2900 CPU that comes inside a 19.5-inch LED. Coming in December, an updated configuration of the E63z will be available with the Core i3 chip option, which also features an HDMI output and Rapid Charge USB port — neither coming on the previous iteration. You'll pay much more for the upgrades, however, as the new $699 price tag is well above the original $479 asking price.

Personal-computer and smartphone maker Lenovo Group Ltd. 0992.HK +1.48% said it would create a new company in China next year that focuses on selling mobile phones online.

The new smartphone company, which will have a different brand name, is part of Lenovo’s efforts to fend off fierce competition in China from Xiaomi Inc., a local smartphone startup that sells its handsets online while cultivating its fan base through its own software, services and entertainment offerings. Xiaomi is also known for being marketing savvy, engaging with consumers through online forums and social networks.

Lenovo said in a statement Wednesday that it will continue to sell Lenovo-branded phones in China through local carriers and retailers.

The new smartphone company, which will start its operation April 1, 2015, won't only sell devices online but will also offer applications and focus on consumer engagement, Lenovo said.

Lenovo, which last year overtook Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ -1.00% as the world’s largest PC maker, has been quickly expanding its smartphone business for the past year. In the second quarter, Lenovo was the world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker by shipments behind Samsung, 005930.SE +1.56% Apple AAPL +1.56% and Huawei Technologies Co., according to IDC.

Lenovo and Xiaomi are two of the biggest smartphone makers in China, both selling more phones in the market than Samsung Electronics Co. or Apple Inc.

In recent quarters, Lenovo and Xiaomi have been competing intensely against each other for the number-one position by shipments.

Lenovo’s plans to set up a new mobile phone business comes as the company is in the process of completing a $2.91 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility in the U.S.

But Lenovo said that the new smartphone company will be a China-focused company.

Lenovo to Establish Internet-Focused Smart Device Company in China Next Year

Hong Kong, Oct. 15, 2014 – Today, Lenovo Group (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) is announcing that it will create a new company focused on building a leading internet-based smart devices and services business in China. The company will become operational on April 1, 2015. It will operate under a separate name and brand.

The objective of this move is to help Lenovo attack the fast growing consumer mobile device market in China, with a focus not only on devices, but also on software and application development and close customer engagement. Currently Lenovo has a leading smartphone business, which sells mainly through open market sales and carrier relationships. While Lenovo has and continues to strengthen its own company-branded online channels as part of its go-to-market strategy, the new company will exclusively focus on direct-to-consumer sales, marketing and product development using an internet-based business model.

Effective April 1, Chen Xudong, currently president of Lenovo’s China geography and Asia Pacific – Emerging Markets (East Asia, Hong Kong, ASEAN and India), will become CEO of this new company. He has substantial marketing, sales and operational experience, and a proven track record in building Lenovo’s China business to record levels in PC, tablet and smartphone.

Liu Jun, executive vice president and head of Lenovo’s Mobile Business Group, and George He, senior vice president and head of Lenovo’s Ecosystem and Cloud Services Group, will be the co-chairmen.

Tong Fuyao, currently vice president of China’s relationship business will become head of Lenovo’s China business. Ken Wong, currently vice president and general manager of Asia Pacific – Emerging Markets (East Asia, Hong Kong, ASEAN and India) will become head of this business, a role also previously held by Chen Xudong. Both will report to Gianfranco Lanci, Lenovo’s chief operating officer and head of the company’s Personal Computer Group.

In the next few months, details about legal structure, financing plans, business strategy, product plans and organizational structure will be announced. During this time, Chen Xudong will continue to lead the China and APEM business. At this time the company is not releasing further operational, financial or structural details.

Lenovo Extends Term of Joint Venture Agreement with NEC Corporation

Thank you for joining us on another historic day to discuss the successful close of our acquisition of the IBM x86 server business. We will officially finalize the deal on Oct. 1 and become the number 3 server company in the world.

To close this acquisition, we have worked closely securing approvals with a number of regulatory bodies. We have built trust and understanding in this process. These successful reviews are even more proof that Lenovo is a transparent and reliable global company.

Lenovo has big plans for servers. Gerry will talk more about this in a few minutes. But now we definitely have even more capability to win around the world. The System X business gives Lenovo a global brand known for innovation capability. We know building a great brand is critical, and now we have one of the best.

And this brand was built by more than 6,000 highly skilled talents, who will now bring to Lenovo world-class knowledge and deep experience in enterprise. They have created more than 1,100 patents that become part of our rich IP portfolio. And they will join us from a network of 34 R&D and 7 manufacturing facilities. Lenovo Set to Close Acquisition of IBM’s x86 Server Business

Acquisition to strengthen Lenovo’s position as global, diversified tech leader, accelerates growth of enterprise and cloud strategies

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and Armonk, New York – September 29, 2014 – Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that conditions for Lenovo’s acquisition of IBM’s x86 server business have been satisfied and the parties anticipate they will begin closing the transaction effective on October 1, 2014. The acquisition will make Lenovo the third-largest player in the $42.1 billion global x86 server market.

Lenovo is acquiring System x, BladeCenter and Flex System blade servers and switches, x86-based Flex integrated systems, NeXtScale and iDataPlex servers and associated software, blade networking and maintenance operations. IBM will retain its System z mainframes, Power Systems, Storage Systems, Power-based Flex servers, PureApplication and PureData appliances.

The agreement builds upon a strong history of collaboration that began in 2005 when Lenovo acquired IBM’s PC business, including the ThinkPad line of PCs. Lenovo’s pending acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google will make it the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, while further strengthening its position as a top-three maker of smart connected devices – PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Lenovo is buying IBM's x86 server business intact and is committed to following the IBM x86 product roadmap, including Flex and x86-based PureFlex integrated systems. As previously disclosed, upon close, IBM will continue to provide maintenance delivery on Lenovo’s behalf for an extended period of time, so customers will experience a seamless transition with no change in their maintenance support.

The global team of the IBM x86 server business will be organized under Lenovo’s Enterprise Business Group. Adalio Sanchez led the x86 server business at IBM and will continue in this capacity at Lenovo, as senior vice president of Enterprise Systems, reporting to Gerry Smith.

The purchase price is approximately US$ 2.1 billion. Approximately US$ 1.8 billion will be paid in cash at closing after estimated adjustments and approximately US$ 280 million will be paid in Lenovo stock, based on the closing price of Lenovo’s stock on September 26, 2014. The transaction satisfied regulatory requirements and conditions, including clearance by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), the European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

The transition will begin Wednesday in countries that are part of the initial closing, which includes most major markets. The transaction is expected to close in most other countries later this year, with the few remaining countries following in early 2015.

Lenovo, Xiaomi and Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn Electronics will obtain licences to operate as MVNOs in the Chinese market, Mobile World Live reports. White-goods producer Haier and Hainan Airlines also are on the list of potential MVNOs, according to the report. Last month, the government of China awarded a total of six MVNO licences. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) expects the number of MVNO users to grow to 50 million by the end of 2015, according to previous reports.

Lenovo solves the partner network equation with hybrid cloud

When the company started investigating a new hosting environment to service its partner network, it needed to be secure, accessible for partners 24/7, easily and quickly updated, and provide single sign-on capability. Most importantly, resource constraints meant the new site had to be up and running without changes to the back-end systems.

The result is Lenovo Partner Access, a hybrid cloud environment based on an application called webNetwork, which delivers a private datacentre, a public cloud build and local device resources through a common desktop with a single password.

Lenovo called on independent cloud service consultant 2nd Watch to manage the migration and hosted environment. Today, the system operates on Amazon Web Services' (AWS) EC2 inside a virtual private network, with MySQL database technology and AWS relational database service and domain name system.

The outcome has been high availability, support for multi-tenancy, and skills to provision AWS as demand scales up or down. Lenovo's chief solutions officer, Rich Cheston, who managed the move internally, has seen the scalability potential of cloud computing bear fruit.

Dell, Lenovo Among OEMs Launching Intel 'Grantley'-Based Servers -

HP and Cisco already have unveiled refreshed systems that also bring greater levels of efficiency, performance and flexibility.
Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Cisco Systems are among the OEMs that will be rolling out new systems Sept. 8 when Intel officials introduce the latest generation of its mainstream Xeon E5-2600 server chips.
Intel will be officially unveiling the new processors—which officials said will offer significant improvements in performance and power efficiency—at a press event the day before its Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco. A broad range of system makers are expected to be on hand at the event in San Francisco to talk about their servers that will leverage the new chips.
At the same time, the OEMs will unveil other enhancements beyond the processor upgrade—in such areas as power and cooling management—designed to make their systems better able to address the changing demands being put on data center infrastructures by such trends as mobile computing, big data and the cloud. In addition, they want to take advantage of the optimization Intel is offering in the Xeon E5-2600 v3 "Grantley" processors in areas in the data center beyond the servers.
"They're using this as an opportunity to not only completely refresh their server systems, but also their storage and networking," Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst with Moor Insights and Strategy, told eWEEK. - Bringing innovative technologies to the systems will be important not only as workloads change, but also as competition from white-box makers increase. Gartner analysts in a Sept. 3 report said that server original design manufacturers (ODMs) are now directly courting enterprises and organizations that run hyperscale data centers, and as a result, sales of servers by ODMs directly to customers will represent 16 percent of global x86 server shipments by 2018 and will generate $4.6 billion in revenue.

"ODM companies are rapidly changing their business model, as they are directly targeting hyperscale customers," Naveen Mishra, research director at Gartner, said in a statement. "These companies are expanding their business scope to also include enterprises in the near term. These customers are willing to consider innovative [data center] infrastructure designs that can offer better scalability and can drastically reduce the total cost of ownership of servers (including power and cooling expense) compared with mainstream servers offered by traditional server OEMs."
The new Grantley chips will be based on Intel's "Haswell" architecture, and will offer such features as DDR4 memory—which will bring faster speeds, more bandwidth and greater energy efficiency—as many as 18 cores, and technologies that will improve virtualization support, power efficiency and management, increase performance, and help expand the Intel Architecture into networking and storage.
Officials with HP and Cisco already have given the industry some indication of what they are doing with the servers that will be powered by the new Intel chips. In a Webcast event Aug. 28, company executives introduced HP's upcoming ninth-generation ProLiant servers that they said will offer three times the compute capacity of previous ProLiants, greater efficiency in processing multiple workloads, infrastructure provisioning that is 66 times faster and better total cost of ownership (TCO).
The ProLiant Gen 9 servers will bring three times the performance-per-watt capabilities of previous generations, require 60 percent less space and lower storage acquisition costs by 80 percent, officials said. In addition, in combination with HP's storage, memory and networking capabilities, workload performance of business-critical applications will be improved by four times, according to the company. - The new systems will be combined a range of new capabilities with other HP products, such as OneView—which gives organizations a single tool for managing all of their data center systems—to help organizations create a pool of compute, networking and storage resources that can be dynamically drawn upon to address whatever workloads demand. "As it has done previously, HP is using the shift to a new generation of silicon to rethink its platforms, from lower-end tower and rack servers to blades and converged systems to emerging solutions like Apollo and Moonshot," Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT Research, told eWEEK at the time of the HP announcement. "One of the most interesting things about these new solutions is how wholly their new features rest on HP's proprietary technologies, particularly new networking and storage features, and management software offerings." Cisco officials Sept. 4 unveiled an expanded portfolio for its Unified Computing System converged infrastructure solutions, which included refreshed B-Series blade and C-Series rack systems that will be powered by the Grantley chips. - Dell is introducing its 13th generation of PowerEdge servers that will not only feature the new Intel chips, but also storage enhancements that bring storage closer to the compute and enabling software-defined storage and new management capabilities that reduce complexity, improve TCO, and speed up configuration and deployment. The new PowerEdge systems will offer hot-plug solid-state disks (SSDs), faster 1.8-inch SATA drives, increased local storage capacity, and high-performance RAID and performance caching. For organizations, the improvements will mean faster database processing, more concurrent users and transactions, double the data throughput of previous systems and optimized data placement through tiering. - The systems also offer zero-touch configuration capabilities, which can reduce configuration time by as much as 99 percent; automated server firmware updates; and automated technical support for 45 percent less boot time and 73 percent less troubleshooting time, according to Dell officials. In addition, Dell is leveraging near-field communications (NFC) to make server inventory and setup faster—84 percent faster for inventorying, for example. Through Dell's OpenManage mobile app and iDRAC QuickSync technology, customers will be able to simply tap a server with their tablet, and the information for the server—from the operating system to the BIOS—will automatically be pulled into the server, Kevin Noreen, marketing director of server solutions for Dell, told eWEEK.


With iDRAC Direct, organizations can put a USB key into the USB port and rapidly configure a server, reducing configure setup time by as much as 95 percent, according to the company. Dell's OpenManage Essentials 2.0 software offers automated lifecycle management that offers a one-to-many console that will capture and clone server configurations, and creates instant checks for configuration compliance.
Brian Payne, Dell's executive director of PowerEdge servers, said servers need to be more agile to deal with both traditional and new data center workloads, which Dell is addressing with its new PowerEdge systems. The news comes as Lenovo closes in on integrating the x86 business acquired from IBM. The two rack servers, ThinkServer RD550 and RD650, will remain in the portfolio as Lenovo takes on IBM's product line.

According to Lenovo, the RD550 can handle up to 12 drive buys and 26T B of internal storage. By cramming that much compute and storage into the rack, the 1U RD550 can operate as a 2U system. The RD550 is designed for intensive workloads and line of business applications.

The 2U RD650 can house up to 26 drive buys and 74TB of internal capacity. The RD650 is designed for databases, analytics and video streaming as well as other storage intensive applications.

Both servers, which use the latest Xeon processors from Intel, are built for hybrid storage so customers can mix and match solid state drives with traditional ones.

In addition, Lenovo launched the ThinkServer TD350, which features up to two Xeon processors in a 4U tower. The TD350 has up to 512GB DDR4 and 90TB of internal storage capacity with either 2.5- or 3.5-inch configurations.

All of the servers have Lenovo software to support various configuration, management and configuration tools from VMware and Microsoft.

Lenovo has presented the Flex 2 Pro laptop at the IFA trade fair in Berlin, according to Netzwoche.ch. It has a 15.6-inch screen that can be turned up to 300 degrees backwards for use as a stand, for instance, for watching feature films. It is 2.5 centimetres thick and weighs 2.3 kilogrammes. It has a core-i7 processer by Intel, 8 GB of RAM and an SSD with capacity of 256 GB or SSHD with 1 TB storage. It is due on the Swiss market before the end of 2014 with a recommended retail price of CHF 1,000.

Innovative engineering and design leadership are the foundation of the Lenovo ThinkServer RD550 and RD650 rack systems. By creating space-optimized drive trays, chassis and system boards, the RD550 and RD650 provide clients with industry-leading storage density and more I/O connectivity within standard 1U and 2U form factors. The RD550 can accommodate up to 12 drive bays and up to 26.4TB1 of internal storage, providing the performance and capacity of a 2U system in a 1U form factor — perfect for line-of-business applications and compute-intensive workloads. ThinkServer TD350: Full Enterprise Capacity and Performance in a 4U Tower
With up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 series processors, the TD350 packs performance, scalability and expandability into a tower form factor. It features nearly triple the memory capacity and double the storage capacity of the previous-generation server with up to 512GB of DDR4 memory and 90TB of internal storage capacity with either 2.5- or 3.5-inch drive configuration options — all in a condensed 4U package. Two enterprise-class M.2 solid-state drives for secure booting are available as internal options. The TD350 also comes equipped with a lockable front bezel to protect storage drives with critical business data from physical intrusion, and 95 percent of all parts are tool-less for simple expansion. Digitimes Research: Samsung, Lenovo cutting tablet prices in the US market

Samsung Electronics and Lenovo have recently started a wave of price cuts for their tablets in the US market. Samsung offered price cuts for its 7- and 10-inch models, but their prices are still higher than those of its competitors. Lenovo reduced the price of its 8- and 10-inch entry-level tablets, further enhancing the devices' competitiveness in the market. Lenovo's 10-inch 16GB model is now priced below US$180.

Meanwhile, Asustek Computer's T100 and Acer's Switch 10 2-in-1s are seeing their prices gap narrow.

For the US' 7-inch 8GB tablet market segment, to counter its significant shipment drop in the second quarter, Samsung, in August, reduced the retail price of its 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Lite from US$149 to US$139, decreasing its price gap with other competitors' mainstream devices to only around US$10. Samsung also reduced its 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 from US$199 to US$179, but the price point is still over US$30 more expensive than similar-level devices from competitors, Digitimes Research found.

Asustek joined the US' 7-inch 8GB tablet market segment with its US$129 entry-level ME170C. However, compared to Asustek's ME176C released in early June, the ME170C has inferior processor, panel, storage and version of Android, but their price gap is only about US$20, making the ME170C weaker in price/performance ratio than the ME176C.

Meanwhile, Lenovo's 7-inch 8GB tablet, the A7-40 has adopted MediaTek's quad-core solution, but is only priced around US$129. Digitimes Research believes first-tier vendors are trying to preserve as much profit as possible before competition during peak season starts.

Currently, tablet players that are most aggressive over pricing are second-tier vendors that are using solutions from China's supply chain. Hewlett-Packard (HP)'s 7 Plus tablet, which uses a chip solution from China-based Allwinner Technology and is assembled by China-based Neostra, is currently priced below US$100. Toshiba's Excite Go tablet, using Intel's China Tech Ecosystem (CTE) solution is also priced at US$99.

Lenovo smartphones launch in 10 EU countries: Here's why western Europe won't get them
Summary: Lenovo is targeting European countries in a big way - but don't expect to see its brand name on devices in western Europe's major markets.

Lenovo is planning to start selling smartphones in 10 new European Union countries in an effort to expand its mobile business.

The Chinese hardware manufacturer has already launched handsets in Romania and the Czech Republic, and plans to do the same in Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Greece, and Turkey in the coming weeks. Next in line are Poland, in November, and Croatia and Slovenia in the next quarter

The hardware manufacturer is aiming high in terms of sales expectations. "Initially our goal is to reach a five percent market share in a space of six months. We want to quickly get to the double digit figure in a year from now," Ivan Bozev, regional general manager at Lenovo South-East Europe, said on Thursday, during a visit to the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Lenovo's aspiration are in keeping with previous efforts, as the company quickly reached that double digit market share in other markets it's entered.

For Romania, one of the largest countries in the region, Lenovo has chosen to launch mid-range and entry level smartphones. Three A Series handsets — the A859, A536, and A32 — together with two S Series devices, the S860 and S850, were announced here earlier this week.

"The market is shifting a little bit, from the premium devices to mid-range and entry level. And quite frankly it’s simply because the technology has improved so much that at mid-range price point you get a smartphone that does everything you want as a consumer," Aymar de Lencquesaing, SVP and EMEA president at Lenovo, said.

The most affordable of the pack, the Lenovo A328, costs 500 RON (€144). It has a 4,5-inch 854 x 480 display, quad-core 1.3GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 2000mAh battery. It sports a five-megapixel rear camera and a two-megapixel front-facing equivalent. The device runs Android 4.4 KitKat.

The most expensive handset is the Lenovo S860, at 1200 RON (€273). It has an all-glass exterior with a five-inch 720p IPS display. The smartphone also has a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor with 1 GB of RAM. The S860 sports a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a five-megapixel front camera.

The company is highlighting its 4000mAh battery that allows up to three days of use in a charging cycle - the reason why the S860 is the primary smartphone of Lenovo's EMEA president. "I’m the traveling type. I sometimes jokingly say that I rarely sleep in the same bed two nights in a row," de Lencquesaing said.

In Eastern Europe, Lenovo has partnered with both retailers and telcos in order to sell the newly-launched devices. The main target is consumers rather than enterprises, as people usually use their own devices at work in the region, and it is difficult for companies to impose a certain product or brand.

Why Western Europe won't get Lenovo phones
The Chinese hardware manufacturer is only planning to launch smartphones under the Lenovo brand in eastern European countries, following its acquisition of Motorola.

"In the west, our intention is to build on what already has been done by Motorola. Motorola is present now in a number of European markets, in the UK, in Germany, in France, in Italy, in Spain, and so we would rather accelerate what Motorola has done, rather than stop and do it with the Lenovo brand. Our intention when the [Motorola] deal closes is to invest and push and accelerate the Motorola rollout in Western Europe," de Lencquesaing said.

Lenovo believes it's smarter to launch one brand in a particular place and to focus on it, then, at some point, there might be room to introduce the other. "We’re putting the final touches on the acquisition of Motorola. We’re two separate companies and we're waiting for all the regulatory approvals," Lenovo’s EMEA president said.

In January this year Lenovo acquired the Motorola Mobility smartphone business from Google, to strengthen its position in the growing market. The purchase price was $2.9bn.

Windows Phone plans?
The Chinese company has had a long lasting collaboration with Microsoft, but for the moment there aren't any plans around the launch of a Windows Phone handset in Romania.

"We like the Windows platform for phones as an operating system. So while the majority of what we do is Android-based, it doesn't mean that we wouldn"t at some point launch a Windows phone in Romania, but this is not on the agenda today," de Lencquesaing said.

Lenovo's launch in Eastern Europe will put even more pressure on local brands, which are having a hard time dealing with the competition created by the market's titans, Samsung and Apple.

The dynamics of this business are such that it is extremely difficult to survive in the lung run if you only have four, six or ten percent market share in a market the size of Romania," Lenovo's EMEA president said.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 2, IdeaTab S8 leaked ahead of IFA

With the IFA show scheduled to start in Berlin next week some companies are spilling the beans on their new products early. Others are having their beans spilled for them. Lenovo falls into the latter camp.

Notebook Italia reports the company will introduce a new 8 inch Android tablet and an updated version of its ThinkPad Helix 2-in-1 ultrabook with an 11.6 inch tablet section.

While there are only a few details about the Helix 2, Notebook Italia has several pictures suggesting that Lenovo will offer 3 different keyboard docking options for the new version of its business-friendly 2-in-1 tablet/ultrabook.

There’s a basic keyboard dock, a Pro keyboard which has a Lenovo TrackPoint system as well as a standard touchpad and a connector on the side of the case for storing a digital pen when it’s not in use, and a Powerbase Keyboard which has a built-in battery to extend the run time of the tablet.

According to Notebook Italia, the ThinkPad Helix 2 will have 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of solid state storage, and a full HD display. What we don’t yet know is what processor it will have: the original ThinkPad Helix launched last summer with an Intel Ivy Bridge processor and the company has yet to update the system with a faster, more efficient Haswell chip.

Maybe the new model will have a Haswell processor… or maybe it’ll be powered by a Broadwell (5th-gen Core) or Bay Trail (cheaper, low-power) chip.

Either way, don’t expect the new ThinkPad Helix to be cheap. More than a year after launch, Lenovo still charges $1500 or more for the the original ThinkPad Helix (although it’s on sale right now for $1249).

I’ve been seeing the IdeaTab S8 name pop up at the FCC and other sites for the past few weeks, but I’ve been holding off on reporting on the tablet until more details were available. Now it looks like there are more details.

Merimobiles is taking pre-orders for the tablet for $0… although there’s a suggested list price of $300 (which may actually be lower when the tablet goes on sale). It’s said to feature an 8 inch screen, an Intel Atom Z3745 Bay Trai lprocessor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. The tablet runs Android 4.4 KitKat and Notebook Italia says it’ll be available with a choice of an HD or full HD display.

Other features for the IdeaTab S8 include 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, an 8MP rear camera, 1.6MP front-facing camera, GPS, and at least some models will support 3G networks.

Lenovo steps up its European smartphone ambitions with the launch of five Android devices

The Chinese hardware manufacturer has decided to launch its European campaign in Eastern Europe first, starting with Romania, where Lenovo smartphones are already popular due to sales through unofficial channels such as eBay. Rumours about a Lenovo smartphone launch in Romania have been building for over a year.

Lenovo said it has "high expectations" for its sales in Eastern Europe and, after Romania, it's planning to hold press launch events in Bulgaria and Hungary. The company's smartphones are already available in Serbia — though in Europe, the country isn't part of European Union.

On Wednesday, Lenovo announced the Romanian launch of five affordable smartphones: two S Series devices, the S860 and S850, and three A Series handsets, A859, A536, A328. The first two were unveiled this February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year.

According to Lenovo, the metal-backed S860 has "epic battery power" for all-day use, and runs on Jelly Bean. The dual-SIM smartphone has a 5.3-inch 720p IPS display, quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek processor, Mali-400MP2 GPU, 2GB of RAM, an eight-megapixel rear camera and 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera. Its also has a 4000mAh non-removable battery, which can be used to charge other devices.

The Jelly Bean powered S850 is aimed at the "the fashion-conscious and socially connected", according to the company. The smartphone has an all-glass exterior and houses a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, five-inch 720p IPS display, 1GB of RAM, 2000mAh battery, 13-megapixel rear camera, and a five-megapixel front camera for selfies.

Lenovo also launched three affordable smartphones from the A Series. The A859 sports a five-inch 720p IPS display, quad-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 CPU, 1GB of RAM, eight-megapixel rear camera, 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera and a 2250 mAh battery. It runs Jelly Bean.

The A536 has Android 4.4 KitKat onboard, a five-inch 854x480p display, 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, five-megapixel rear camera and a two-megapixel front camera. It's pitched by Lenovo as an all-round device.

The A328 also comes with the latest Android version, 4.4 KitKat. It packs a 4.5-inch 854 x 480 display, five-megapixel fixed-focus with flash rear camera and a 2MP fixed-focus front camera, quad-core 1.3 GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 2000mAh battery.

This smartphone launch in the European Union comes just after the release of Lenovo’s first quarter earnings report when, for the first time, the company sold more smartphones than PCs. It sold a record high of 15.8 million mobile devices, an increase of 39 percent year on year. PC shipments were up 15 percent for the quarter, reaching 14.5 million units.

Lenovo is the fourth largest smartphone vendor in the world, according to IDC, with a 5.4 percent market share, behind Samsung, Apple, and Huawei.

Lenovo made $10.4bn over the quarter, an 18 percent increase compared to last year. Profit grew to $214m, a 23 percent rise year on year.

It seems as though the folks over at Lenovo are pretty hot on further expanding their range of hybrid ThinkPad Yoga devices, and these upcoming 2-in-1 notebooks with most probably arrive with larger displays to check out. Of course, until something official is announced, nothing concrete can be promised, other than making one’s very own conclusion from a bunch of names that have been listed on a Lenovo support page.
It is a well known fact that Lenovo’s range of Yoga notebooks happen to sport touchscreen displays as well as special hinges which will allow you to fold the display all the way to the back – and this 360 degree stunt results in your notebook being able to function as a tablet, albeit a rather heavy one no matter how you look at it. Well, it seems that there were mention of a Lenovo ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14 and a Lenovo ThinkPad S5 Yoga 15 in a support page, where frankly, there aren’t any 14” or 15” ThinkPad Yoga notebooks in the market, which means that either someone has made a typo, or it is an extremely strong hint that something larger – nay, make that at least a couple of things which Yoga users are used to, are making their way to the market soon.
However, folding back a 15? notebook’s display to turn it into a tablet is going to make it one heavy behemoth that I’d hate to hold and read comics or watch movies on.
