DTE Energy invests in Michigan-made battery storage systems, advancing clean energy goals and spurring billions in economic growth across the stateMay 27, 2026 1:00 PM
PR Newswire (US) Utility announces agreement with LG Energy Solution Vertech for Holland, Mich.-manufactured batteries to support eight battery storage projects across the stateDETROIT, May 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy today announced a $1.6 billion investment in Michigan's clean energy future, partnering with LG Energy Solution Vertech to develop Michigan-made battery energy storage systems across the state. The procurement agreement will support eight projects with battery systems delivered over a two-year period, generating an estimated $2.3 billion in total economic impact while creating good-paying jobs in Michigan, improving grid reliability and meeting the state's clean energy goals. The eight energy storage projects will deliver 1.5 gigawatts or 6 gigawatt hours of battery storage, a critical technology that enhances grid reliability. The battery energy storage systems will store electricity during times of excess generation and distribute the power to customers as needed to meet peak periods of customer demand. This will reduce strain on the grid and decrease the need to start and stop generation as demand fluctuates."DTE is committed to building a bright future for Michigan," said Joi Harris, president and chief executive officer, DTE Energy. "By working with LG Energy Solution Vertech to bring more battery storage online through their Holland, Mich. manufacturing facility, we're keeping Michigan at the forefront of technology and economic opportunity – creating good-paying jobs in communities while driving responsible growth, improving reliability for our customers and investing in clean energy solutions."DTE's commitment to responsible data center development is providing a significant boost to battery energy storage in the state, making the electric grid cleaner, more reliable and more resilient. DTE has identified the resources needed to reliably serve its new data center customers without compromising service for existing customers, while remaining in compliance with Michigan's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and Clean Energy Standard (CES). In the case of DTE's approved contract for the Oracle data center in Saline Township, the battery energy storage systems that Oracle is funding are, by themselves, sufficient to meet DTE's portion of the state's 2030 clean energy standard for battery storage. The company's focus on supporting Michigan suppliers extends beyond this partnership. In 2025, DTE spent approximately $2.9 billion with Michigan-based businesses, reinforcing local supply chains, creating local jobs and supporting companies that are essential to building the state's energy infrastructure."Michigan is a key U.S. manufacturing region for our company, where many of our colleagues live and work," said Jaehong Park, chief executive officer and president, LG Energy Solution Vertech, the U.S. energy storage division of LG Energy Solution. "We're thrilled to work with DTE to bring Michigan-made energy storage to our communities. As more US-made energy storage projects are added to the energy grid, we're building opportunities for advanced roles in the state that support our national energy needs."The battery storage projects will directly support 1,800 good-paying hourly and salaried jobs at LG Energy Solution's manufacturing plant in Holland, Mich. and more than 350 additional jobs across construction and operations, while also driving broader economic benefits for local communities. This investment builds on DTE's continued progress in improving electric reliability, with the company investing nearly $4 billion in 2025 alone to improve infrastructure and generate cleaner energy for its customers. This ongoing investment led customers to experience the best reliability in nearly two decades in 2025. Together, the DTE and LG Energy Solution Vertech agreement represents a significant step forward in building a more resilient, sustainable and economically vibrant Michigan."In today's energy-dense, high-data-need AI environment – more efficient energy production and data centers are critical infrastructure," said Sandy K. Baruah, President and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber. "I applaud DTE Energy and their partners for leading the way and for partnering with organizations like the Chamber to 're-set' the conversation about data centers and for our shared commitment to get this right. Michigan's prosperity depends on it." About DTE Energy

These strategic investments are strengthening electric reliability, expanding clean energy resources, and ensuring the safety and dependability of DTE's natural gas services, all while keeping energy costs as affordable as possible for customers. The company also reported first quarter earnings of $247 million or $1.19 per diluted share, compared with $445 million, or $2.14 per diluted share in 2025. Operating earnings for the first quarter of 2026 were $407 million, or $1.95 per diluted share, compared with 2025 operating earnings of $436 million, or $2.10 per diluted share. Operating earnings exclude non-recurring items, certain mark-to-market adjustments and discontinued operations. Reconciliations of reported earnings to operating earnings are included at the end of this news release."At DTE, providing safe, reliable and affordable energy to our customers is our highest priority," said Joi Harris, DTE Energy's president and CEO. "Our dedicated team is focused on modernizing our infrastructure and expanding our clean energy resources to deliver more dependable, sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions that are essential to our customers' everyday lives. As Michigan attracts new growth, including major investments like data centers, we are proud to support these opportunities to fuel Michigan's economy and ensure our customers benefit from improved reliability and long-term affordability."Harris noted the following accomplishments:Secured agreement to power Google's new data center in Michigan: In March, DTE Energy submitted energy contracts to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to support Google's planned 1 gigawatt (GW) data center in Van Buren Township. These contracts are structured to meet Google's energy demands while safeguarding DTE's existing customers - ensuring long-term affordability, maintaining reliable service, and advancing clean energy initiatives. Under this agreement, Google will pay the full cost of its energy usage, including all expenses related to new generation, storage, transmission, and distribution needed for the data center. By adding a large customer like Google, fixed grid costs are shared across a wider customer base, which is expected to reduce pressure on bills for existing customers – generating nearly $1.7 billion in affordability benefit over the life of the contract.Invested in electric distribution infrastructure to advance reliability improvements for customers: In the first quarter of 2026, DTE Electric invested $400 million to continue improving the reliability and resilience of the electric grid. The company's ongoing investments to modernize the grid in recent years have contributed to customers experiencing fewer power interruptions and faster restoration times. For example, when severe winds swept through Michigan in March, DTE experienced 60% fewer outages compared to similar historical events, and 99% of affected customers had their power restored in less than 48 hours. These ongoing investments, supported by the Michigan Public Service Commission's rate order in February, build on the company's commitment to ensure customers experience fewer and shorter power disruptions.
Marked 10 years of empowering Michigan small businesses with energy efficiency grants: On the 10th anniversary of the Energy Efficiency Makeover contest, DTE awarded three Michigan small businesses $5,000 each for energy efficiency improvements to help reduce energy costs and support long-term efficiency benefits. Over the past decade, the contest has awarded $150,000 to small business winners across the state. In addition to the financial reward, each winner received a customized, onsite energy assessment from a DTE energy advisor, including support coordinating the installation of upgrades and business-specific energy efficiency recommendations.

DTE Energy intends to pause future electric rate requests following upcoming filing as data centers come onlineApril 23, 2026 1:00 PM
PR Newswire (US)
Affordability benefits from data centers expected to help offset reliability investments for all customersDETROIT, April 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE) announced today that its electric company intends to forego asking for rate increases for at least two years following its upcoming filing with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) on April 28, 2026."Now more than ever, we know affordability matters to our customers – and we're doing everything we can to keep energy bills as low as possible while also providing the reliable power they need," said Joi Harris, president and chief executive officer, DTE Energy. "As long as the first data center project we're supporting comes online as planned by the end of 2027 and we're able to receive other regulatory approvals, we will refrain from filing another rate request until at least 2028—providing customers two years without an increase in rates after the current request is complete."Affordability Benefits of Data Center DevelopmentWhen a new large customer is brought onto the electric system, fixed costs can be spread more widely. DTE's two data center contracts – one approved and one currently with the MPSC for approval – will contribute nearly $9 billion to improving DTE's electric system through 2045, helping to reduce the total amount needed from other customers."That's why we're excited to see the expected benefits of responsible data center development come to fruition," said Harris. "This new industry is not only helping to grow Michigan's economy, but once the data centers are fully online, it will make energy more affordable for all customers while bolstering our investments in creating the grid of the future." Upcoming investment requestDTE Electric's upcoming investment request is designed to build on recent reliability gains and continue strengthening its electric grid for the customers and communities the company serves in southeast Michigan. The request reflects DTE's ongoing commitment to targeted investments that reduce outages, restore power faster when interruptions do occur and ensure reliable and cleaner energy for customers every day.In 2025, DTE's electric customers experienced the company's best reliability performance in nearly 20 years — progress driven by sustained investments in tree trimming, grid hardening, automation and other system improvements."Reliable power isn't just about keeping the lights on, it's about supporting families, businesses and the broader Michigan economy," said Matt Paul, president and chief operating officer, DTE Electric. "While we're proud of our progress, we know we have more work ahead. Every investment we make moves us closer to our goal: a stronger, more reliable grid for every DTE customer, no matter the weather."As DTE continues investing in reliability and cleaner energy, the company is focused on limiting the long-term impact on customer bills and reducing the need for future rate requests. DTE continues to drive efficiencies in its operations and expects growing data center development to create meaningful customer affordability benefits over time. What Happens NextThe filing on April 28 represents a formal request of $474.3 million to support several billion dollars of investment in the electric grid and power generation, marking the beginning of an approximately 10-month regulatory review process. A final decision by the MPSC and any potential rate changes are not expected until late February 2027.Key Things Media Should KnowThe filing itself does not result in a bill increase. The filing will be reviewed by the MPSC as a contested case with opportunity for intervenor testimony. A final decision on the rate request will not be received from the MPSC until February 2027, with a customer rate change happening soon after.Customers are seeing real reliability improvements – when we invest, it works.
DTE delivered its most reliable year in nearly 20 years in 2025, reducing the time customers spent without power by 60% compared to 2024, building on a 70% improvement the year before. Continued investment is essential to delivering the reliability customers demand and deserve. Learn more: Building a stronger, more reliable electric grid for youThese investments are enhancing DTE's clean energy advancements. The upcoming filing also supports the completion of the conversion of the Belle River Power Plant from coal to natural gas as well as the development of the Trenton Channel Energy Center – expected to be the largest stand-along battery energy storage facility in the Great Lakes region when it is commissioned. Learn more: DTE CleanVision IRP: Roadmap to Net Zero by 2050DTE remains focused on affordability. Since 2021, DTE's electric bill growth has been among the lowest in the country. Residential electric bills are in the first quartile nationally and remain below the state of Michigan, Great Lakes region and national averages. For more information about DTE's plans to build the energy grid of the future and the impact of our investment requests, visit https://www.dteenergy.com/futureNo costs related to data centers are included in this investment request and data centers will not raise customer rates. Data centers—including the one DTE has been approved to support in Saline Township and the project under review in Van Buren Township – are governed by separate contracts and are required to pay the full cost of the infrastructure needed to serve them, ensuring other customers are protected.
