(NASDAQ:VFS) reported first-quarter results on Monday that came in below Wall Street forecasts, with the electric vehicle manufacturer posting a loss of -$0.48 per share, compared with analyst expectations of a -$0.28 per-share loss. Despite the earnings miss, the company’s shares rose 0.98% in premarket trading following the release of the results. Quarterly revenue totaled $920.7 million, falling short of the $1 billion consensus estimate. However, sales increased 41.7% from the same period a year earlier, reflecting continued growth in vehicle deliveries and market expansion efforts. During the quarter, VinFast delivered 58,577 electric vehicles, representing a 61% increase year-over-year. Deliveries were nevertheless 32% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2025. The company said the sequential decline was largely due to seasonal factors and the impact of the Lunar New Year holiday in Vietnam. Profitability metrics weakened significantly during the period. Gross margin deteriorated to negative 73.6%, compared with negative 35.2% in the first quarter of 2025. VinFast said the decline was mainly driven by costs associated with its extended free-charging programme introduced in February 2026, as well as higher inventory write-down charges. “VinFast has entered a new phase focused on disciplined execution, long-term sustainability, and scalable growth,” said Chairman Pham Nhat Quan Anh. “We remain committed to strengthening our operational foundation, enhancing capital efficiency, and advancing our transition toward a more asset-light and resilient business model in Vietnam.” Net loss widened substantially to $1.12 billion from $700.4 million in the corresponding period last year. Lorsque les prix de l'essence ont fortement augmenté ces dernières semaines, Edric, un photographe indépendant basé au Québec qui conduit souvent d'une ville à une autre pour son travail et qui aime aussi vraiment prendre la route pour le plaisir, savait qu'il devait faire quelque chose pour entretenir sa passion. C'est alors qu'une information a attiré son attention : les propriétaires de VE sont cinq fois mieux couverts que les propriétaires de véhicules thermiques.1


Intrigué, il est allé sur le web à la recherche d'un contrat de VE abordable et, après plusieurs appels, des passages chez des concessionnaires (qui se sont avérés, rétrospectivement, être ses dernières fois au volant d'un véhicule thermique) et un essai sur route, il est maintenant le propriétaire d'un VF 8 Plus, un VUS tout électrique de taille moyenne d'une marque jeune et ambitieuse du Viêt Nam.

Avec la différence actuelle entre recharger un VE et remplir un réservoir d’essence, et avec une volatilité dont on ne voit pas le bout, cela coûtera 10 000 CAD supplémentaires au cours des cinq prochaines années, selon le propre calcul d’Edric (en supposant 20 000 km par an, environ 9,8 litres pour 100 km pour un VUS à essence contre environ 28,7 kWh pour 100 km pour le VF 8, à environ 1,41 $ par litre d’essence et 0,12 $ par kWh d’électricité).


« Les prix de l'essence ne cessent de grimper et les passages au garage me coûtent quelques centaines de dollars à chaque fois. La voiture vieillit aussi, donc ça s'ajoute au reste. Honnêtement, je ne sais pas pourquoi je n’ai pas changé plus tôt », déclare Edric, qui prévoit de partir dans son véhicule électrique pour un voyage au cours du long week-end de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste.


VinFast propose actuellement le VF 8 en deux versions : Eco et Plus, avec un prix d'appel d'environ 53 600 CAD, en dessous du prix moyen national d'un véhicule neuf. Lorsqu'ils sont combinés aux incitatifs et aux crédits provinciaux disponibles, les clients canadiens de VinFast peuvent recevoir jusqu'à 18 000 $ de rabais et d'économies au total. Les automobilistes canadiens voient une nouvelle fois les prix grimper à la pompe. Revenue surged 138.9% year over year to 39.4 trillion dong, according to a U.S. regulatory filing. Alors que les incitations diminuent et que les acheteurs deviennent de plus en plus prudents, les constructeurs automobiles sont jugés sur les coûts, le service et l'assistance à long terme. L’approche de VinFast axée sur la garantie indique un changement de paradigme dans la manière dont les véhicules électriques sont vendus.


Pendant la majeure partie de sa vie d'adulte, Marc Tremblay, 40 ans, a conduit des voitures à essence parce que c'était tout simplement la norme. Il est passé par une séquence habituelle : une berline compacte, puis un VUS au fur et à mesure que sa famille grandissait, ainsi que des réparations occasionnelles et un entretien de routine. Alors quand il a commencé à envisager l'acquisition d'un véhicule électrique, ce n'était pas par enthousiasme : il voulait réduire les coûts de carburant et simplifier l’entretien, mais il hésitait à plonger tête baissée dans ce qui lui semblait être un « territoire inexploré ».


Ce qui a finalement attiré son attention était une politique d'un constructeur non pas américain ni européen, mais du vietnamien. Ce constructeur était VinFast, avec sa garantie de 10 ans sur le véhicule. Marc n'avait jamais vu ce niveau de couverture sur une voiture à essence. « J’ai eu beaucoup de voitures, et aucune d’entre elles ne s’en est approchée », déclare-t-il. « Cela a certainement rendu l’achat d’un véhicule électrique beaucoup moins risqué. »


L’histoire de Tremblay reflète un changement généralisé, alors que 2026 s’ouvre sur un marché canadien des véhicules électriques qui se sent lucide. Les acheteurs prennent des décisions prudentes sur la propriété à long terme, en évaluant les véhicules électriques de la même manière que les voitures à essence : sur le prix, la fiabilité, l'accès au service et si l'achat semblera toujours judicieux des années plus tard. Dans cet environnement, des marques comme VinFast découvrent que la voie à suivre passe par l'assistance et la politique après-vente, plutôt que par le produit seul.


L'éducation est le premier point clé. Le message de VinFast s’est de plus en plus concentré sur les réponses aux questions posées par les acheteurs précoces, notamment sur le coût de possession, les performances en hiver et la méthode à suivre en cas de problème, en utilisant des explications simples sur le coût total de possession et la garantie, au lieu de tenir un discours abstrait sur l’innovation.


Mais l'éducation compte peu sans politique pour la soutenir. C'est là que VinFast a fait son pari le plus volontariste, en offrant à ses véhicules avec une garantie de 10 ans ou 200 000 kilomètres, ainsi qu'une garantie de batterie illimitée de 10 ans en utilisation normale.


VinFast tente également de rendre la propriété automobile plus abordable, au-delà du seul segment des véhicules électriques. Selon AutoTrader, le prix moyen d’une voiture neuve au Canada se situe désormais autour de 65 000 CAD1. Le VinFast VF 8, un VUS électrique de taille moyenne avec jusqu'à 412 kilomètres d'autonomie, est proposé à environ 47 206 CAD, plaçant un VUS électrique à la portée des acheteurs qui comptent chaque dollar. La réduction des coûts initiaux, combinée à la diminution des dépenses d'énergie et d'entretien, permet à l'entreprise de considérer l'adoption des véhicules électriques comme une décision financière rationnelle plutôt que comme un acte de foi.


L'accès aux services est tout aussi important au Canada, un pays défini par les grandes distances et le climat. Pour faciliter la recharge, VinFast a intégré son application mobile à environ 95 % des stations de recharge publiques en Amérique du Nord. L'application VinFast permet d'accéder à plus de 100 000 chargeurs rapides de niveau 2 et c.c., tout en permettant aux propriétaires de prendre des rendez-vous et d'appeler l'assistance routière via une interface unique. Ces détails font rarement les gros titres, mais pour de nombreux primo-acquéreurs de VE, ils sont synonymes de tranquillité d'esprit, car ils savent qu'ils pourront facilement trouver une station de recharge et communiquer rapidement avec l'équipe d'assistance en cas de difficulté.


Alors que les incitations s'estompent et que le marché achève sa phase d'adoption précoce, les véhicules électriques au Canada seront moins vendus sur des promesses et davantage sur des preuves.
