iBasis (NASDAQ: IBAS), a KPN affiliate, today announced that the GSM Association (GSMA) has certified iBasis’ International SMS Hubbing Service, a short message service interworking solution that provides mobile operators with secure SMS transit and access to over 650 operator destinations through a single connection. A member of the GSMA, iBasis earned certification for the new service through the GSMA’s Open Connectivity program.

The simplicity of the iBasis International SMS Hubbing Service eliminates the need for mobile network operators (MNOs) to negotiate numerous bilateral contracts with other operators around the world by providing a single point for commercial and technical SMS connectivity. The service federates interconnections with other GSMA-approved SMS hubs across the world for a standardized hubbing environment that guarantees security, roaming, return traffic and least-cost routing (LCR) between operators.

“iBasis’ extensive relationships with mobile operators, especially throughout Europe and Latin America, make our new International SMS Hubbing Service particularly strong for operators needing to quickly and securely expand termination capabilities worldwide,” said Paul Floyd, iBasis Senior Vice President of Global Products, Network, and Systems. “This service reaches more than 95 percent of the world’s economy, and customers are already benefiting from additional revenues and efficiencies the SMS Hubbing solution provides. Our Open Connectivity certification builds on iBasis’ technical leadership in the industry — from our work advising the i3 Forum on IP voice interconnects, to our successful trials of the GSMA’s IP eXchange (IPX).”

iBasis offers international SMS hubbing via SS7 (C7 in Europe) and IP connections. The service is designed to complement customers’ existing bilateral agreements via expanded SMS coverage and prepares MNOs to eventually transition to the GSMA’s multilateral approach for Open Connectivity. The iBasis International SMS Hubbing Service supports all major SMS transport protocols, along with mobile number portability (MNP).
