                   REPURCHASE OF PREFERENCE SHARES

Following the authority granted by shareholders on 22 May 1998, the company
has today repurchased a further 125,382 9.5% cumulative preference shares of
#1 each at a price of #1.50. This represents some 14.19% of the class
remaining following the repurchases effected on 22, 27 and 28 May 1998.
