Southern Company, AGL Resources receive merger approval from California regulators

ATLANTA, March 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Company (SO) and AGL Resources (GAS) have received unanimous regulatory approval of the companies' proposed merger from the California Public Utilities Commission.

AGL Resources is the parent company of Central Valley Gas Storage, a natural gas storage facility located in the Sacramento River valley.

When completed, the combination of Southern Company and AGL Resources is expected to create the second-largest utility company in the U.S. by customer base, bringing together:

Eleven regulated electric and natural gas distribution companies providing service to approximately 9 million customers;
Operations of nearly 200,000 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines;
More than 80,000 miles of gas pipelines; and
Approximately 44,000 megawatts of electricity generating capacity.

I think NICOR used to be "People's Gas" back when I was a kid. Not positive but remember NICOR was a big dealer in fumes.

Gotta like AGL Resources. It bought out NICOR, an Illinois company. I actually bought AGL before the merger/acquisition.

My wife inherited 1,099 shares NICOR (converted to 921 shares of AGL Resources) less than a year ago.

The $1.80 dividend and $41.56 share price is giving out a nice yield of 4.3%. Much better than the 0.01% rate for NOW checking or a 0.10% rate on savings. Heck, even the Treasury rates suck right now.

One observation on dividend stocks (especially utilities) is that there isn't too much price movement, either up or down, but on the other side, there is some sense of safety knowing that people will always need electric or gas or water.

AGL Resources Inc. (AGL Resources) is a energy services holding company whose principal business is the distribution of natural gas. It is also involved in several related and complementary businesses, including retail natural gas marketing to end-use customers in Georgia, Ohio and Florida; natural gas asset management and related logistics activities for each of its utilities, as well as for non-affiliated companies; natural gas storage arbitrage and related activities; and the development and operation of natural gas storage assets. The Company operates in four operating segments: distribution operations, retail energy operations, wholesale services and energy investments, and a non-operating corporate segment. In July 2010, the Company sold AGL Networks, its telecommunication business that constructed and operated conduit fiber infrastructure within select metropolitan areas. On December 9, 2011, the Company completed its merger with Nicor Inc.
