Israel's Golan Telecom in Possible Takeover Move on Cellcom

The two majority shareholders in Israeli telecoms operator, Golan Telecom are reported to have received an approach to buy the rival mobile network, Cellcom Israel.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Globes reported that Cellcom's controlling shareholder, the financially troubled IDB Holding has put its stake up for sale.

The company has denied this, but Globes says that it has other sources confirming that a sale is being discussed.

All the Israeli networks have suffered from increased competition and a hostile regulatory regime in recent years, and consolidation has been expected between a couple of the networks.

Cellcom is the country's largest mobile network, while Golan Telecom is a low-cost new entrant to the market that secured its license in 2011.

BRIEF: Cellcom to market Nano-SIM for iPhone 5 [Globes, Tel Aviv, Israel]

Sept. 19--Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL) is preparing for the unofficial arrival in Israel of the iPhone 5, following the global launch on Friday. The iPhone 5 uses a new kind of SIM card, the Nano SIM, instead of the Micro-SIM used in the iPhone 4, and standard SIM cards used in many mobile phones on the market.

Consumers who bought an iPhone 5 overseas will not be able to cut the SIM cards on the market to Nano SIM size, because of their various thicknesses. Instead, they will have to buy a new SIM card.

Cellcom will offer the Nano SIM at NIS 99 each, beginning tomorrow, so that customers will be ready for the iPhone 5, when they begin arriving in Israel on Sunday via private stores or by delivery services from the US. Mobile carriers are expected to compete in the market by selling Nano SIM card alongside Cellcom.

Cellcom Israel (NYSE: CEL) announced that a purported class action filed against the Company and two other cellular operators, in August 2011, without stating the amount claimed, in connection with charges alleged to be in violation of of their licenses, was dismissed with prejudice.

The purported class action related to alleged charges that were based on units which are different than the units allegedly required by the defendants' licenses, for calls initiated or received by the subscribers while abroad.

good for you, though don't take any displays of percentage divie yields, those are still reflecting divies that have long been reduced. It is more like 7%, minus another 20% foreign tax. Still nothing to scoff, especially if new management will turn it around and get the customers back.

Yep, that big volume in May was tied to both how bad the market was in May, and I think it was about the time the courts slammed Celcom over and over, I'd have to look back at the DD, it might even have coincided with the financials. Very sad, fortunately I didn't stake the farm in them, have "token" amount of shares. The class action suits will harass the company for a long time, they really have nowhere to go to get new customer base.
