ExactTarget, a leading global provider of on-demand email marketing and interactive marketing solutions, services customers by sending out seven billion emails per month. The company has roughly four petabytes of data under storage, including customer and configuration/system databases, which it replicates between its Indianapolis and Las Vegas data centers. Consumer click data for its customers is mission critical, with a 100% uptime requirement. However, latency led to slow data transfers and underutilization (10%) of the available bandwidth. By deploying WAN optimization technology, ExactTarget was able to speed replication by 20% and is now able to better utilize available bandwidth. And while backups are currently done with tape, the company is planning to evaluate cloud storage as a key part of its DR strategy.

Though organizations reap great benefits from IT consolidation initiatives, ultimately having data and servers living in fewer places, they encounter performance challenges and the need to protect data more often and recovering quickly becomes increasingly important. Rethinking the Architecture -- Edge-Virtual Server Infrastructure: Granite Granite is the revolutionary product that introduces a new architectural approach known as edge virtual server infrastructure (edge-VSI) that enables global enterprises to completely consolidate edge applications, servers and storage to the data center. Edge-VSI does to edge servers what virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for desktops.
