Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) expects to recall roughly 2.0
million vehicles in Europe to fix defective gas pedals, a person
familiar with the matter said Monday.
Because the company is still working on finalizing the exact
number of vehicles to be recalled, it's unclear when the recall
will be formally announced, the person said.
The move comes after Toyota said last Thursday it will recall
2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. for the same gas pedal-related
problem.
The combined volume of 4.3 million vehicles in the two regions
to be recalled due to the faulty pedal is equal to 55% of the 7.81
million cars and trucks that the Toyota group including Daihatsu
Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd. (7205.TO) sold globally in 2009.
The final recall volume in Europe could vary, depending on the
country's rules for repairing faulty parts, the person added.
