The plant will be in the town of Guben, southeast of Berlin, about a 90-minute drive from where Tesla is building its gigafactory.

Several automakers and battery companies, including Tesla, Volkswagen and China's CATL, are expanding their production capacity in Europe's leading economy, with a view to an expected mass deployment of electric vehicles.

The Guben City Converter-Refinery project has initial capital costs of $560.2 million and is estimated to produce revenues of $7.6 billion over the planned 20-year lifespan. The project has a repayment period of 64 months.

The nominal annual production will be 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide from some 178,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate from multiple third parties. By-products such as aluminium silicate, gypsum and sodium
