Internet-of-Things Networking Pioneer
Introduces a Series of New Strategic Features for its
Multi-Application IPv6 Smart City Platform; Adds New Smart Lighting
Partners
Today at the Smart City Expo World Congress, Silver Spring
Networks, Inc. (NYSE: SSNI) unveiled the next generation of its
multi-application, smart city networking platform. Key advancements
to Silver Spring’s IPv6-based networking platform
include smart city extensions in the Streetlight.Vision
Central Management System (CMS) software, integrated GPS, a
migration path for those dependent on antiquated
GPRS, and successful interoperability testing with
multiple smart city CMS solutions in advance of certification for
the TALQ outdoor lighting protocol. Silver Spring also announced
new partners EnLight and Lumnex, who are integrating their smart
lighting technologies with the Silver Spring networking and
software platform.
“Our secure, reliable, and globally proven IPv6 smart city
platform gives cities and critical infrastructure operators the
confidence and economics they need to make long-term investments on
behalf of their citizens,” said Brandon Davito, Vice President of
Smart Lighting and Cities, Silver Spring Networks. “As the
sophistication, diversity, and quantity of sensors skyrockets, we
are committed to helping these operators easily deploy, connect,
and manage a vast array of devices and data, helping improve the
livability of their cities.”
Introducing New Capabilities for IPv6-Based Smart City
Networking Platform Silver Spring’s IPv6-based smart city
networking platform enables operators to deploy multiple
applications atop a single, standards-based network. Today Silver
Spring introduced several platform advancements including:
- Smart City Extensions for
Streetlight.Vision CMS Software – In 2014,
Silver Spring acquired Streetlight.Vision, a leading supplier
of control and management software for smart outdoor lighting
applications. Streetlight.Vision is now extending the scope of its
solution to provide support for strategic smart city applications
such as environmental sensors, motion sensors, electrical vehicle
charging stations, parking meters, weather stations, and more.
- Integrated GPS – Location
awareness of network-controlled sensors provides network operators
with:
- Easy provisioning of devices such as
street lights and traffic lights, greatly simplifying deployments
and improving ROI;
- Near real-time and constant physical
asset management and tracking, dramatically reducing inaccuracies,
improving maintenance, and lowering costs and field losses;
and
- Establishing a foundation for
additional geo-location services such as those for emergency
services, noise and pollution sensing, and parking and traffic
management applications, amongst others.
- GPRS Migration Path – A broad
range of city assets such as street lights and traffic light
controllers, electric vehicle chargers, advertising and city
information panels, and bike rental stations are often controlled
by legacy cellular GPRS communications, which can suffer from
unreliability, high costs, and carrier abandonment. With its
innovative Network-as-a-Service offering, Silver Spring offers an
easy migration path for those dependent on GPRS. Under this
offering, Silver Spring will deploy, manage and operate smart city
networks on behalf of cities, allowing them to reduce upfront
capital equipment and deployment costs, leverage forward compatible
technology, and reduce operational and management
expenditures.
- Successful TALQ Testing – A
long-time leader in open standards, Silver Spring has successfully
tested its platform for TALQ interoperability with the Citegestion,
subsidiary of the group Citelum, MUSE and the Streetlight.Vision
CMS solutions to help ensure seamless integration of LED and
conventional street lights with its IPv6 smart city network.
This will enable increased interoperability, greater device
diversity, lower integration and deployment costs, and acceleration
of the introduction of citywide street light networks which can be
leveraged for expanded smart city applications and services over
time.
Adding New Lighting Partners to Help Connect Critical Smart
City Infrastructure
Silver Spring today also introduced several new partners who are
integrating their smart city technologies with Silver Spring’s
IPv6-based networking platform.
- EnLight – lighting control
nodes that allow operators of public lighting and street light
infrastructure to remotely control on/off, dimming, manage assets,
and outage tracking, leading to greater reliability, improved
service, and increased energy efficiency.
- Lumnex – lighting controls that
allow real-time and centralized remote management of lighting
devices, down to the individual end point.
Continued Growth and Expansion of Silver Spring’s Smart City
Networking Platform
Silver Spring’s award-winning smart city platform is already
being deployed in some of the world’s most iconic cities:
- Florida Power & Light has selected
Silver Spring and Streetlight.Vision for North America’s largest
networked street lighting program deployment under
contract, to connect and control 75,000 street lights in
Miami-Dade County.
- Silver Spring, in partnership with
Citelum, is deploying a citywide network canopy across Copenhagen
connecting 20,000 street lights, and providing the city the
opportunity to add additional smart city applications in the
future.
- Silver Spring was selected by Glasgow,
UK to integrate LED street lights, traffic cameras, and sensors
into two adaptive lighting systems in the city center and along the
River Clyde’s “Clyde Walkway” to help reduce energy costs, increase
road safety, and promote cycling uptake to help drive health
benefits. Silver Spring is also streaming noise and air quality
data to the city’s Open Data platform, including a custom interface
enabling the city’s operations center to illuminate lighting for
first responders.
