Bought this 7 weeks ago @5.70, so am very pleased so far.
However, I have noticed NGVC is down every trading day so
far this year (2018). New stores are opening all over. We recently
had a new store in Spokane, WA. My wife loves the store and
wishes it wasn't so far away ( 75 miles, each way ) from our home.
Could be a buyer again if we fall below 7.80.

Maybe the CEO and the board who earn almost 500,000 grand each per year should take a large pay cut of 90% until this stock is above 17 dollars again. This stock never should have fallen this low.

Natural Grocers facing less competitive risk, says Wells Fargo

After Natural Grocers' comps decelerated in Q2 due to competitive pressures, Wells Fargo thinks the risk of new competition will ease going forward, as the company's stores now overlap with at least one of its major competitors in most of its markets. The firm thinks the company's guidance is conservative. It cut its price target on the shares to $29-$31 from $39-$41 but keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.

I have been buying since the drop...

...with the intention of holding for long term capital gains. Natural Grocers has been a customer of mine for a year and I have been very impressed with the rate at which they are opening new stores. Their business model seems genius to me...offer organic foods in a small simple store at a significant discount to Whole Foods, which makes organic food more affordable and accessible for for people who can't afford to shop at Whole Foods. The natural/organic food industry will continue to grow and I expect them to continue to grab a larger portion of that market. I had been wanting to own this company but felt it was expensive. This drop, offers a nice long term entry point. They are already one of the few major players in this market and they still have plenty of growth ahead of them. The company has also existed longer than Whole Foods.

Buy, Sell or Hold on NGVC? I have followed for about a year. Liked it better at 40 than at the current 24. I think there is pressure because the consumer is not spending money on organics or too many new players in the space like Sprouts and the Whole Foods folks. Whole Foods is proven and NGVC?

Been in since IPO...what a stellar first year. The stock is a bit overvalued, but it has now held at this level for awhile.

The stock has corrected by more than 13% over the past few weeks. Though the volumes have not been too great, the weakness remains. Perhaps there is a lot of profit booking, and the high current valuations may have led to the selling. Though many analysts are pretty bullish on the future of the stock, its high ttm P/E (68) and forward P/E of 41 have perhaps led to some concerns. The profit margin of 2.27% also indicates little room for slippages. The debt is reasonable, but the expansion plans of the company may add to this burden in the future. In any case, the investors have been rewarded by the performance of the stock. It is nearly double its offer price despite the correction. The correction may end between $24 and $25, but still there is room for more caution. The base effect will not let the company grow at a great pace in the next few quarters, and there may be some slowing of the growth. So while the stores may grow, the sales growth may not necessarily be as robust as what it has been in the past. Correction in the market will only add to the pressure. So the stock may become more range bound rather than a robust growth stock. Long term prospects will remain positive as the market for its products is expected to rise. NGVC has to remain open to new segments and attempt to leverage innovative products coming in the market. Chromadex Corporation (CDXC) recently launched a vitamin Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) which is touted to be a wonder vitamin with great future prospects. New products / segments may be required to support growth. The margins also need to be improved so that the company is able to generate enough surplus to take care of expansion needs in the future.

NGVC has been a great story for investors so far. The momentum has increased after the recent results, the stock is almost double the offer price. While the returns have been great so far, perhaps time has come to start getting a little cautious. The current valuations of a forward P/E of 45 factor a lot of future positives already. The base effect will not let the sales / net income rise at the same pace forever. So the next earnings may be a good time to exercise extra caution. Even in the intervening period, it will be good to keep an exit point in mind. A correction in the market can trigger a correction in the stock as changed sentiments may lead to a lot of profit booking. Corrections in the market is overdue and almost imminent. Still, the markets have their own way of playing out and we may even see higher levels. So one should have a strategy based on the risk appetite. NGVC has to bring out innovative products to maintain the good growth and can look to diversify in other segments. Smaller companies like ChromaDex Corporation (CDXC) have recently launched innovative products which have prompted its insiders to increase stake in the company. The investors of Chromadex include the legendary Dr Frost (Frost Gamma Investments) and Barry Honig. NGVC also has to work on increasing the margins as the current net and operating margins may not be able to support future growth without increasing leverage. The current D/E ratio is 20 and further rise may not be very comforting for a company of this size. So it is a good idea to trail the success of the stock with a stop loss and hope that the great move continues. Time has come for a little bit of caution.

NGVC results are expected to be declared early next month. For the full year 2012, the sales had increased by 27% to $336 million ($264 million in 2011). The corresponding net income had also increased by 90% from $3.5 million to $6.65 million. For the quarter ending December 31, 2012, the sales were $95.83 million ($74.84 million in the same quarter in 2011). The net income increased from $0.99 million to $2.22 million during the same period. Even sequentially, the revenue and net income had shown reasonable growth. The stock is up by more than 61% from its offer price. It had sold off early this month after hitting the high of $26. It has rebounded from $22.53, and is now looking strong. It is trading well above the 50 DMA and the 200 DMA, and the volumes have picked over the last few days. The 3 month average still remains higher than the 10 day average due to the big volume days in the second week of this month during the sell off period. In a run up to the results, the volumes are expected to remain robust and the stock price may try to touch higher levels. Market for organic foods & vitamins is increasing fast and other companies are launching new products all the time. Recently, ChromaDex corporation launched its new product Purenergy which is a low caffeine drink containing its proprietary ingredient pterostilbene. CDXC's product BluScience, which contained the same ingredient, was a success, and it is expected that this new product may also do well. Development of new products and also improving the efficiency of its retail chain is the key to future growth of NGVC. Relatively, it works on a small store format, and the customer experience is extremely important. The next trigger for the stock will be the earnings.

This recent listing has been doing great. It is up by more than 33% compared with the listing price of around $18. The offer price was $15, and compared to that the gains for investors have been 59% in less than one year. The company declared good results for 2012 with the sales increasing from $264 million in 2011 to $336 million in 2012 (27% rise). The net income increased from $3.5 million to $6.65 million (90% rise) during the same period. Even on quarterly basis the revenue and net income showed a growth of 28% and 124% respectively. All this has translated into increasing upward momentum for the stock. It is now trading well above its 50 DMA of $21.48 and 200 DMA of $20.77. It is very close to its high of $25 which it achieved in October last year. The way the momentum is going, it seems that that level may be taken out soon. The last trading session saw a 8.2% rise with exceptional volumes of 163K. This is way above the 10 day average volume of 96K shares. NGVC operates in low margin retail business and the market for organic groceries and dietary supplements is a very competitive one. It is crucial that the products on its shelf have great benefits for the customers so that they come back for more. The increased health consciousness of people has increased the market for organic foods and supplements with several players like MusclePharm (MSLP) coming in the limelight for their exponential growth. The next few quarters will be crucial for the company, and if there is a significant turnaround in the US economy, the probability of rising sales / margins will increase. The company itself is giving a guidance of 28% growth in EPS in 2013 which implies that the growth trend may be expected to continue.
