Vogtle Unit 1 Automatically Shuts Down, Safety Systems Respond as Designed

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- At 9:06 a.m. ET, while plant workers were performing equipment maintenance, Plant Vogtle Unit 1 automatically shut down.

All Plant Vogtle safety systems operated as designed and expected. The unit is safe and stable, and plant personnel are investigating the cause of the shut down. There was no risk to the public.

Unit 2 currently is at 97 percent power in preparation for a routine, scheduled refueling outage.

Georgia PSC Approves Vogtle Construction Costs

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Public Service Commission, in a 5-0 vote, approved Georgia Power's spending on Vogtle units 3 & 4 for the period including July 1, 2010, through Dec. 31, 2010.

The construction of Vogtle units 3 and 4 is monitored by the Georgia Public Service Commission via monthly filings and construction monitoring reports filed every six months. Moreover, additional tools are in place to help protect customers, including $1 billion in savings from U.S. Department of Energy loan guarantees, production tax credits and CWIP (Construction Work in Progress).

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), is preparing the Vogtle site in order to begin full scale construction of the first new nuclear power plants in the U.S. in more than 25 years upon receipt of a Combined Construction and Operating License (COL) from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

The project is moving forward toward issuance of the Vogtle COL. The company expects to receive the Vogtle COL around the end of 2011 with Unit 3 becoming operational in 2016 and Unit 4 in 2017.

Georgia Power Announces Planned Redemption of Georgia Power Capital Trust VII 5-7/8% Trust Preferred Securities

ATLANTA -- Georgia Power announced today the planned redemption on Sept. 23, 2011 of all $200 million aggregate liquidation amount of the Georgia Power Capital Trust VII 5-7/8% Trust Preferred Securities (NYSE Symbol: GPEPRX).

The redemption price for the Georgia Power Capital Trust VII 5-7/8% Trust Preferred Securities will be $25 per Trust Preferred Security plus accrued and unpaid distributions thereon to the date of redemption.

It is expected that The Bank of New York, as Property Trustee, will notify each registered holder by first class mail on or about Aug. 23, 2011. The Bank of New York is located at 101 Barclay Street, New York, New York 10286.
