Salesforce Plunges 21% YTD: Is CRM Stock Worth Retaining?

Salesforce, Inc. CRM has had a tough run this year, with the stock falling 20.7% year to date. That’s worse than the broader Zacks Computer – Software industry, which fell 8.8% during the same period. Compared to key competitors like Microsoft Corporation MSFT, SAP SE SAP and ANSYS, Inc. ANSS, Salesforce’s slump appears even more pronounced.

One-Month CRM Stock Price Performance

This steep decline raises the question: Should investors cut their losses and exit, or is it worth holding onto? While the near-term headwinds are real, the long-term growth story for Salesforce remains intact, making a strong case for retainment.

Why Did Salesforce Stock Underperform?

The company’s recent slump is part of a larger tech pullback triggered by fears of an escalating tariff war and slowing economic growth. That’s compounded by a less-than-stellar fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 result.

Although revenues grew 7.5% year over year to $9.99 billion, the figure slightly missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. More concerning is CRM’s guidance, which forecasts that first-quarter and full-fiscal 2026 revenue growth may further slow down to 6-8%. This marks a clear deceleration from the double-digit growth investors had grown accustomed to in the previous years.

Enterprise customers are tightening their IT budgets due to economic uncertainty, which has slowed Salesforce’s momentum. Analysts anticipate that this cautious spending environment may persist. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenues depicts year-over-year growth of 7.6% in fiscal 2026 and a 9.3% increase in fiscal 2027.

While this is slower than its historical pace, Salesforce is far from a declining business — its leadership position in enterprise customer relationship management (“CRM”) software remains unchallenged.

Salesforce Dominates Enterprise CRM Market

Despite near-term growth concerns, Salesforce remains the undisputed leader in the field of CRM. The company continues to outpace competitors such as Microsoft, Oracle and SAP, holding the largest market share, according to Gartner’s rankings. This dominance isn’t fading anytime soon.

Salesforce has built an extensive ecosystem that integrates seamlessly across enterprise applications. Its acquisitions — such as Slack and, more recently, the Own Company — demonstrate a long-term strategy of expanding its footprint beyond CRM into enterprise collaboration, data security and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automation.

AI is a key part of Salesforce’s growth engine. Since launching Einstein GPT in 2023, the company has embedded generative AI capabilities across its entire platform, allowing customers to automate workflows, enhance decision-making and improve customer interactions. As generative AI adoption accelerates across industries, Salesforce is positioned to capitalize on this trend.

Another long-term tailwind is rising global spending on generative AI. Gartner estimates that worldwide generative AI spending will hit $644 billion in 2025, implying a 76.4% year-over-year increase. Enterprise software, a key segment for Salesforce, is expected to grow even faster, with a projected 93.9% increase. Even if economic conditions slow down spending in the short term, digital transformation remains a top priority for businesses, ensuring steady demand for Salesforce’s solutions.

Salesforce Trades at Attractive Valuation

One of the silver linings of the recent sell-off is that Salesforce’s valuation has become more reasonable. The stock currently trades at a forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 23.31x, below the industry average of 27.82x. While not necessarily cheap, this valuation suggests that much of the near-term pessimism is already priced in.

Also, Salesforce is trading at a lower P/E multiple compared with industry peers such as Microsoft, ANSYS and SAP. At present, Microsoft, ANSYS and SAP have P/E multiples of 27.25x, 25.93x and 37.42x, respectively.

Bottom Line: Hold Salesforce Stock for Now

Salesforce’s recent struggles stem from a broader market correction and concerns about slowing growth. However, given its dominant position in enterprise software, ongoing AI initiatives and strong long-term growth potential, the recent pullback does not justify an exit.

Its valuation has also become more attractive relative to historical levels. While the company faces short-term headwinds, its fundamentals remain intact, making it worth holding onto. Salesforce carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) at present.

Software giant Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) is down 2.9% at $298.34 at last check, following mixed fourth-quarter results and a disappointing fiscal 2026 revenue forecast. Though revenue of $2.78 per share beat estimates of $2.61, revenue of $9.99 billion came in below expectations. No fewer than 13 analysts slashed their price targets on CRM after the event, though J.P. Morgan Securities noted the pullback was a potential buying opportunity.

It's worth noting that CRM's 14-day relative strength index (RSI) of 19.3 sits firmly in "oversold" territory, which helps bulls' "buy the dip" case. On the charts, today's negative price action has the cloud stock dropping below the $300 level, a key level of both support and pressure over the past year.

At the very end of January, the stock neared its Dec. 4 record high of $369, but February's tumble has it well removed from those levels. Year over year, the equity is dipping into negative territory as it adds to its 11.6% year-to-date deficit.

Over in the options pits, CRM has seen 40,000 calls and 36,000 puts exchanged straight out of the gate -- four times the amount typically seen at this point. The May 250 put is the most popular contract, where new positions are being bought to open.

Salesforce.com reported soft guidance Wednesday following fourth-quarter revenue that fell short of analyst estimates.

Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) shares fell 5% in after-hours trade following the report.

Salesforce.com announced adjusted earnings per diluted share of $2.78 on revenue of $9.99B. Analysts polled by Investing.com anticipated EPS of $2.61 on revenue of $10.04B.

Looking ahead to the first quarter adjusted EPS of $2.53 to $2.55 on revenue between $9.71B and $9.76B, compared with Wall Street estimates of $2.62 and $9.91B, respectively.

Salesforce said it expects full-year 2026 adjusted EPS between $11.09 to $11.17 on revenue of $40.5 billion to $40.9 billion, compared with consensus of $11.21 and $41.36B, respectively.

Salesforce cutting 1,000 roles amid AI push

Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) is cutting about 1,000 roles as its new fiscal year begins, Bloomberg reported on Monday, although the firm is still hiring more sales personnel for its artificial intelligence products.

Over 1,000 roles will be affected, although displaced workers will be able to apply for other internal positions, the Bloomberg report said, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The enterprise software giant had trimmed about 1,000 roles in two separate cuts in 2024, with part of these cuts also at the recently acquired But it had also reportedly hired over 1,000 new sales personnel to sell its new AI products, specifically its generative AI agents.

Salesforce has touted its AI agents as the next major driver of sales in the coming quarters, and has aggressively promoted the technology, which is called Agentforce. The company’s AI agents can act independently in completing some tasks, such as answering basic customer questions and even evaluating potential sales opportunities.

Salesforce has about 72,000 employees across the world as of 2024.

The company’s reshuffling of its employees comes amid similar moves in the broader technology space, especially with the advent of gen AI over the past two years.

Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) stock is 0.5% higher to trade at $331.52 at last glance, as the cloud software company prepares for its third-quarter earnings report, due out after the close on Tuesday, Dec. 3. While earnings could cause some short-term volatility, there's a seasonality picture taking form that's more worrisome in the long term.

According to Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of the 25 worst returns in December, CRM is the worst performing stock on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) when looking at data from the last 10 years.

Per White's analysis, the security finished the month lower nine times over the last decade, averaging a 4.7% drop and beating sector peers Oracle (ORCL) and Paycom Software (PAYC). A move of similar magnitude would put Salesforce stock near the $315, an area it's traded above since early November.



On the charts, Salesforce stock has been on a tear, finishing 11 of the last 15 weeks higher. This November was the stock's best monthly performance in a year, with help from the 20-day moving average. However, the recent outperformance could have the stock due for a short-term pullback.



Circling back to earnings, Salesforce stock has a mixed history of next-day sessions, finishing four higher and four lower over the last two years. Regardless of direction, the equity averaged a 7.5% swing the day after reporting, and the options pits are pricing in a slightly larger move of 10.3% this time around.

Blue-chip software stock Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) broke above resistance at the $265-$267.50 range late last week, which also coincides with its year-to-date breakeven level. Plus, the shares went on to stage a bounce after a retest of this level.

CRM also just crossed above its 200-day moving average, which is still sloping higher. With these layers of technical support in place, now looks like a good time to bet on the stock’s next leg higher.

Interesting situation.

We shall see what comes out of this.

I was surprised with nvda as well.

And, both charts do not look too good either.

However, charts follow and what drives stock prices are what's happening in real life and the future that unfolds. Charts are not the driver anyway They are bases for interpretations and guesses for what may likely to happen in the future.
