IBC Bank and Commerce Bank Celebrate Five Years of Teaching Children to Save

For the fifth year, employees from IBC Bank and Commerce Bank are using their professional expertise to promote financial education in their communities through the company’s “Money Buzz” program. IBC began this corporate-wide initiative to provide personal finance education to youth in 2007. IBC Bank is hosting free Money Buzz classes across Texas and Oklahoma as part of its effort to promote Financial Literacy Month and the American Bankers Association’s “Teach Children to Save Day” which was April 24. Corporate-wide, more than 6,200 students at 50 schools will be reached during March through May.

“The Money Buzz program offers children basic financial lessons that our IBC instructors build upon each year. We hope students will use the financial skills they learn through our program when they get their first job, open their first checking account or apply for their first credit card,” said IBC Bank Chairman and CEO Dennis Nixon. “The Money Buzz initiative exemplifies IBC’s commitment to ‘doing more’ by cultivating a group of financially savvy young adults.”

The Money Buzz program was developed by IBC under the direction of certified teachers and provides students fundamental lessons in financial literacy. This year, IBC introduced a new set of lessons for middle school students covering financial concepts including maintaining a check register, reconciling a bank statement and calculating compounded interest earned.
