TYCO APPOINTS JAMES HARMAN VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVERTISING AND BRANDING
PEMBROKE, Bermuda - September 24, 2003 -- Tyco International Ltd. today
announced the appointment of James Harman as Vice President of Advertising and
Branding. Mr. Harman joins Tyco from General Electric, where he spent 23 years,
most recently as Manager of Corporate Advertising.
As Vice President of Advertising and Branding, a newly created position at Tyco,
Mr. Harman will be responsible for corporate marketing communications,
advertising, reputation and brand management, and identity. Mr. Harman will
report to Charles Young, Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing &
Communications.
Commenting on today's announcement, Mr. Young said, "Jim's appointment is a
tremendous win for Tyco. He brings a depth and breadth of experience from his
many years in marketing at GE that is extremely difficult to replicate. I am
confident that his track record of success will help us greatly as we build
Tyco's corporate identity and branding."
Mr. Harman said, "I'm extremely pleased to be joining a company of Tyco's
stature-one with such talented people and strong operating businesses. This is a
terrific opportunity to craft a corporate strategy from the ground up, and I
look forward to working with Charlie and the rest of the Tyco management team to
ensure that the company's broad strengths are clearly and effectively
communicated."
At GE, Mr. Harman held a variety of marketing communications and advertising
positions in the business units and corporate staff. He was responsible for
managing the GE brand globally and GE's world famous 'We bring good things to
life.' ad campaign. He also was responsible for GE's post 9-11 advertising that
was widely regarded within the advertising community as the most effective call
to arms print ad since the 1917 Uncle Sam 'I Want You' poster.
Mr. Harman also has extensive experience in business-to-business advertising
programs, having led an award-winning communications program to establish GE as
a credible supplier to the automotive industry in the late 1980's. A program he
led last year launching a new GE ultrasound product was awarded a Silver Effie
Award, the ad industry's highest honor for communications effectiveness.
In addition to his advertising work Mr. Harman played a large role in developing
and implementing GE's identity makeover in the early 1990's-one of the largest

member of the Association of National Advertisers and chairs their Ad Management
