                   REPURCHASE OF PREFERENCE SHARES

Following the authority granted by shareholders on 22 May 1998, the company
has today repurchased a further 3,941 9.5% cumulative preference shares of #1
each at a price of #1.80. This represents some 6.15% of the class remaining
following the repurchases effected in May, June, August and November 1998.
Cumulative repurchases to date amount to 1,490,370 such shares or 96.12% of
the class.
