                  BOARD APPOINTMENT

The Costain Group has appointed an executive from Sweden's
Skanska, one of Europe's leading construction groups, as a non-
executive director on the Company's main board.

Anders C Karlsson, President of Skanska Europe, is now the
second Skanska executive to take a seat on the Costain board.
Mikael Ekdahl was appointed to the Costain board in 1997 when
Skanska took a 7.6 per cent shareholding in Costain.

Mr Karlsson, as well as being President of Skanska Europe, is
also a member of the Skanska Executive Management Board and
Senior Vice President in Skanska AB.

John Armitt, Costain Group Chief Executive, said: "We are
delighted to welcome Anders Karlsson. He will make a
significant contribution in terms of experience and knowledge
and will be a valuable addition to the Costain board."
