Arasor International Group Ltd. (ASX:ARR), a leading integrated optical and wireless solutions developer and manufacturer, today introduced a revolutionary new way to control and reconfigure optical wavelength connections at the electro-optic layer instead of the electrical or optical layer. A new family of electro-optic reconfigurable components, which form the building blocks for this new layer of optical control plane, will be exhibited at the OFC/NFOEC 2007 in Anaheim, CA. Until now, the network control plane is achieved either at the electrical layer for TDM (Time Division Multiplex) networks or at the pure optical layer for WDM (Wavelength division Multiplex) networks. For each wavelength channel in the WDM network, connections are created and defined by optical filters in the physical optic domain. The creation and control of the wavelength filter is inherently an analog process and, therefore, it has been extremely difficult to realize a scalable and cost effective electronic digital-like device to realize wavelength reconfiguration in the pure optical domain. Arasors innovative electro-optic control plane architecture for the first time realizes complete wavelength generation, discovery, signal processing and control and reconfiguration with full flexibility, including, wavelength interchange with electronic digital control precision at the electro-optic layer, commented Dr. Simon Cao, CEO of Arasor. Further, this new network control plane finally allows for the realization of a true 'filterless' digital reconfigurable optical WDM network. This solution can be easily adopted in existing networks, thereby eliminating the need for tunable lasers and ROADMs, and removing many of the transport problems found in current DWDM networks. While the network architecture is device technology independent, the initial Arasor component technology realization is implemented with well proven LiNbO3 electro-optic technology. With Arasors proprietary 3D wafer process technology, these multi-channel and multi-function reconfigurable electro-optic chips sets are fabricated with a high degree of integration density. Combined with the inherent high degree of digital electronic integration found within the new control plane architecture, the cost of this network optical control plane is order of magnitude lower than existing solutions. The new optical control plane technology was well received by Arasors initial target customers. In regions of fast growing demand for network bandwidth and new IP based services, service providers are aggressively migrating networks from an overlay model of GMPLS (Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching) networks to a peer model. The new optical control plane is the critical missing piece to enable the migration. We are committed to actively promoting and commercializing this new network optical control plane technology on a global scale, Dr. Cao added. The family of new electro-optic control plane component solutions will be presented at Arasors booth (# 3546) at the Optical Fiber Conference and Exhibition (OFC/NFOEC) held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA from March 26-29.
