Medical Director Dr. W. Shawn Conwell Says
System Will Help Clinicians “Reliably Distinguish Between Dense
Tissue, Benign Lesions and Cysts, and Cancers That Can be Lurking
Underneath”
Delphinus Medical Technologies, a pioneering medical imaging
company that developed the SoftVue™ Breast Ultrasound Tomography
(UST), today announced the latest installation of its breakthrough
breast imaging technology at McLeod Regional Medical Center,
Florence, S.C.
SoftVue UST is the only imaging modality designed specifically
to find more cancer in women with dense breasts and is also the
only ultrasound-based breast imaging system that is FDA-approved
for same-day screening as mammography. Delphinus designed the
system as an adjunct to mammography for women with dense breasts to
address the fact that breast cancer screening with mammography
alone reduces mortality by 41% in women with non-dense breasts but
reduces mortality by only 13% in women with dense breasts.
“Mammogram screening has been plagued for decades by the
challenges of breast tissue density,” said W. Shawn Conwell, MD,
FACR, medical director, Breast and Women’s Imaging, McLeod Regional
Medical Center. “The denser the breast tissue, the harder it is to
detect a mass. It’s like looking for a polar bear in a
snowstorm.”
When combined with mammography, SoftVue increases sensitivity by
20 percent and specificity by eight percent, offering comprehensive
characterization at the point of screening which helps increase
cancer detection and reduce short-term follow-ups.
According to Dr. Conwell, “SoftVue allows whole breast
ultrasound tomography to be performed in a controlled, reproducible
setting. Because the entire breast is imaged and archived, we can
compare with prior exams and detect changes over time. Moreover,
SoftVue is an advancement over standard ultrasound because it goes
beyond typically-used grayscale, offering images that contain
additional important data that can be overlayed upon each other to
create a complex tissue character map of the breast. Using this
technology, we can reliably distinguish between dense tissue,
benign lesions and cysts, and cancers that may be lurking
underneath.”
“McLeod Regional Medical Center is one of a growing number of
healthcare institutions that recognize the need to dramatically
improve the standard of care for women with dense breasts and are
adopting SoftVue as the solution,” said Scott White, CEO of
Delphinus Medical Technologies. “We are proud to partner with the
McLeod team to bring the advantages of SoftVue to women of the
south region who are served by this forward-looking
organization.”
