General DataComm, Inc. (GNRD) announces the addition of SpectraComm
IP G.SHDSL (SCIP G.s) to its flagship NEBS Level 3 certified
SpectraComm product line. "SpectraComm IP G.s allows service
providers to support LAN-based applications using Ethernet far
beyond the typical 100-meter (328 feet) distance limitation. By
extending the LAN over longer distances, the network architecture
can be simplified, the need for expensive routers eliminated, and
increased revenues can be realized," said George Gray, chief
technology officer, General DataComm. "For applications in external
environments the SpectraComm IP unit supports operation at extended
temperature ranges from -40 degrees C to +70 degrees C." Extended
Reach - Without Repeaters GDC's SpectraComm IP G.s allows service
providers to operate over an extended range and increase their data
rate without the need for repeaters. SCIP G.s can operate as high
as 4.6 Mbps over a distance of 11,500 feet (3,505 meters) utilizing
2 loops, and 2.3 Mbps using a single loop. At lower rates,
distances up to 20,000 feet (6,096 meters) are obtainable. GDC's
SpectraComm IP G.s provides secure and stable connectivity in
central and remote office applications that manage remote
equipment, via LAN connections or, in the case of legacy equipment,
via craft ports. Increased Revenue Opportunities - First Mile
Symmetrical Ethernet Deployment SCIP G.s delivers a reliable
Ethernet extension solution for use in first mile, symmetrical,
Ethernet deployments. Service Providers have an opportunity to
quickly increase revenues by offering new, managed Business DSL
Services to small-to-medium enterprise customers at speeds up to
9.2 Mbps using 2 loops. Each SCIP G.s unit comes equipped with two
10/100 Base-T ports and eight terminal server ports for connection
to customer equipment, and is fully managed. For applications that
require scalable Ethernet connections, the SpectraComm Ethernet
Switch, (SCES) companion product can be deployed in 9- or 18-port
increments. This approach allows the delivery of new DSL services
at minimal service provider expense. Redundant, Reliable and Secure
SCIP G.s provides standards-based redundancy for Ethernet over the
WAN. Using Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), automated switching
redirects LAN traffic between primary and secondary circuit paths
in the event of a network or link failure. Spanning Tree Protocol
also eliminates network loops, which can cause network outages.
This self-healing, or Safe LAN-X, capability guarantees minimum
downtime and maximum reliability. In disaster recovery
applications, G.s circuits and their LAN traffic can be
automatically switched to alternate paths, minimizing costly
disruptions of service. SCIP G.s can also be equipped with an
optional V.34-compatible integral modem for use as a backup
management path. SCIP G.s supports TACACS+ authentication and GDC's
Irongate Security to protect the network at each individual
Ethernet port. Flexible Packaging SCIP G.s is well suited for
flexible, reliable and secure deployment anywhere in the service
provider's network. SCIP G.s installs easily in GDC's high-density
16-slot SC 5000 shelf, or 2-slot SC 2000 shelf. For standalone CPE
applications, SCIP G.s installs just as easily in SC1001
enclosures. Robust Network Management Designed with Carrier in
mind, service provider craft personnel will appreciate the
comprehensive yet simplified tools for local or remote
troubleshooting, diagnostics and management. This includes GDC's
Smart Command Line Interface (Smart CLI) with user friendly
features like auto-prompting for command arguments, recognition of
abbreviated commands, online help, command line recall and an
advanced utility for generating downloadable ASCII configurations
files. SCIP G.s also provides internet-ready management support
(HTML). An embedded web server agent allows popular browsers to
access the SCIP G.s. A web-based CLI interface is supported, with
access secured by TACACS+ or a multi-level user name and password
login. In addition SCIP G.s is manageable via HP OpenView(R),
Telnet and SNMP. Available now, SpectraComm IP G.s is another
example of GDC's commitment to develop products and solutions based
on application requirements of our service provider, retail and
enterprise customers. About General DataComm Headquartered in
