LIN Media (NYSE: TVL), a local multimedia company, today announced the promotions of John “Jay” Howell to Vice President-Regional Television; Patrick Wholey to President and General Manager of WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV in Providence, RI; and Joseph Abouzeid to President and General Manager of WDTN-TV and WBDT-TV in Dayton, OH.

Mr. Howell previously held the position of President and General Manager of WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV. In his new role as Vice President-Regional Television, he will report directly to Scott Blumenthal, LIN Media’s Executive Vice President Television, and oversee operations of the company’s owned or operated television stations that are located in Providence, RI; Springfield, MA; Norfolk, VA; Buffalo, NY; Dayton, OH; Mason City, IA; and Topeka, KS.

Mr. Howell launched his broadcasting career at WTOV-TV in Steubenville, Ohio in 1989, serving as an Account Executive and then Sales Manager. In 1999, he was hired to be the General Manager of KRBC-TV in Abilene, TX and KACB-TV in San Angelo, TX. Mr. Howell was appointed President and General Manager of WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV in 2001. He served on the FOX Affiliate Board of Governors from 2005-2011, and currently serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations in Rhode Island, including Meeting Street, Crossroads and The Providence Performing Arts Center. He received his bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

“Jay did an outstanding job as General Manager, building revenue and profit performance through the growth of audiences both on-air and online, staff development and relationships with clients and viewers in the local community,” said Mr. Blumenthal. “We are pleased that he is stepping into the company’s new regional management role.”

Prior to Mr. Wholey’s promotion as President and General Manager of WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV, he served as General Sales Manager of the stations since 2006. A native of Rhode Island, he began his career in New York City after graduating from Stonehill College in 1994, working in advertising at Young and Rubicam ad agency, and later in sales and marketing at MTV Networks, the Hallmark Channel and CNBC. Mr. Wholey returned to his home state in 2002 as Account Executive of WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV, before being promoted to Local Sales Manager and General Sales Manager. In his new role, Mr. Wholey will oversee the day-to-day operations of Providence’s CBS and FOX stations and a MyNetworkTV digital channel.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Blumenthal said: “Pat has been an integral part of the growth and success of WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV and brings proven leadership to his role as the new General Manager of those stations. He has strong local ties within the community and a clear understanding of the responsibilities that we have in serving our viewers.”

Prior to Mr. Abouzeid’s promotion to President and General Manager of WDTN-TV and WBDT-TV, he held the position of News Director for WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV. He launched his career at WHDH-TV in Boston, MA, after studying journalism at Boston University. During his eight-year tenure at WHDH-TV, he worked his way up from a newsroom intern to the ranks of Managing Editor. In 2002, WPRI-TV and WNAC-TV hired Mr. Abouzeid as Managing Editor. He was promoted to Assistant News Director in 2004 and News Director in 2005. Under his guidance, the WPRI-TV Eyewitness News climbed to number one in evening news with key demos aged 18-54i for the first time in years, and both stations have won numerous awards. In his new role, Mr. Abouzeid will oversee the day-to-day operations of Dayton’s NBC and CW stations.

“As News Director, Joe transformed the stations’ largest single department into a multi-faceted operation with award-winning, multiplatform content creators that work hand-in-hand with every department in a cohesive way,” stated Mr. Blumenthal. “He brings a skill set to the market that will be very important to the growth and development of our stations in Dayton.”
