Syniverse Technologies (NYSE:SVR), a leading provider of mission-critical technology services to wireless telecommunications companies worldwide, and KDDI, Japan's leading fixed line and mobile phone service provider, today announced the launch of interstandard, international roaming service between KDDI's CDMA network and GSM networks, enabled by Syniverse's UniRoam service. UniRoam is a technology solution developed by Syniverse that enables seamless roaming between CDMA and GSM networks, which are technically incompatible. UniRoam service eliminates the need to subscribe to a second wireless service through a GSM carrier while traveling where CDMA service is unavailable. The solution allows a subscriber to use their existing wireless phone number to make and receive calls while roaming and have those calls appear on their regular monthly bill. Syniverse provides the necessary signaling conversion and translation, number mapping between CDMA and GSM networks, as well as billing data conversion, web tools for customer provisioning and troubleshooting, and 24x7 customer support, while leaving the roaming business arrangements to the CDMA operator and a GSM sponsor operator of its choosing. "With the launch of UniRoam service, KDDI continues to lead the Japanese market in roaming capabilities for subscribers," said Kazuhiko Masuda, KDDI general manager - cellular global business development and planning. "This pioneering technology breaks the limitations of roaming between GSM and CDMA markets. We are especially pleased to offer our subscribers the ability to roam seamlessly from Japan to Europe and other GSM countries." "Syniverse already provides KDDI with a full suite of CDMA roaming services, so it was a natural extension of our relationship to deliver this highly valued interstandard roaming service," said Dennis Ng, Syniverse vice president - Asia Pacific. "By deploying our UniRoam service, KDDI will be offering business subscribers a valuable productivity tool and leisure travelers will appreciate the convenience of making and receiving calls using their existing phone numbers."
