The European Commission cleared Wednesday Nokia Siemens Networks to acquire U.S. telecoms operator Motorola Inc.'s (MOT) networks business.

"After examining the operation, the commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition," the commission, the European Union's antitrust regulator, said in a statement.

Nokia Siemens Networks is a 50% joint venture between Siemens AG (SI) and Nokia Corp. (NOK).
