Emosyn's New Theseus Platinum 100-2 Gives Competitive Edge to SIM Cards New Smart Card IC Features Unique User-Configurable Memory Technology Giving Increased Flexibility and Product Differentiation Capabilities to Customers SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Emosyn International, a fabless semiconductor manufacturer of secure integrated circuits and a subsidiary of SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) (NASDAQ:SSTI), today introduced a new member to its successful Theseus Platinum family of ICs for the demanding smart card environment. Theseus Platinum 100-2 is a highly secure and cost effective microprocessor solution optimized for a wide range of smart card applications, including mobile communication SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) cards and 3G USIM cards. Theseus Platinum 100-2 incorporates several unique features that make it one of the most flexible and highest performing smart card ICs available today. Foremost among these features is Emosyn's breakthrough flash memory- based User-Configurable Memory (UCM) technology, which gives smart card software developers the flexibility to specify the memory space assigned for program code and data storage. With UCM technology, a smart card manufacturer can maximize the amount of data memory available to their customer, depending on the application, while securely preventing access to any sensitive code or information. UCM technology offers the card manufacturer lower manufacturing costs and greater flexibility in managing inventory compared to other memory technologies. UCM incorporates SST's SuperFlash technology that features a cell density close to that of competitors' masked ROM. This creates a flexible, cost-effective solution without the penalties of delayed time to market, inventory management issues associated with custom ROM codes and inherent security concerns with the traditional ROM/EEPROM model. "With this latest edition to our Theseus Platinum family, we are continuing to improve in the areas that matter most to our customers -- flexibility, performance and security," said Brian Clark, vice president of marketing, Emosyn. "The nature of the smart card market is one of rapidly changing needs and our Theseus Platinum 100-2 gives our customers further means to differentiate their products without sacrificing performance, power consumption or security." In addition to UCM, Theseus Platinum 100-2 features an ISO 7816 serial port, a programmable I/O and a Memory Management Unit (MMU) to allow secure control of applications by the operating system. The MMU allows network operators to secure their value-added applications against possible threats from third-party software sharing space on the SIM card. Theseus Platinum 100-2 features 2 kilobytes of RAM memory and 98 kilobytes of UCM. Samples of Theseus Platinum 100-2 are available now. The smart card market is forecasted to reach 2.0 billion units in 2004 according to Eurosmart, an organization promoting the adoption and interoperability of smart cards. The telecom SIM card market is projected to use 880 million of these units. More information about the smart card market can be found at http://www.eurosmart.com/.
