Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced that Silver Atena, a leading international engineering company, has deployed Riverbed® Steelhead® appliances and the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP) across its organization. As a result, Silver Atena has experienced a 4.5x reduction in bandwidth utilization and consolidated its mission-critical applications to the data center. In addition, data backups are now made from a central location, increasing employee productivity and data integrity.

Silver Atena develops critical and high-integrity systems for the aerospace, automotive, rail and other related safety critical markets. The company has over 400 employees based across the globe serving some of the world's largest multinational companies. With a decentralized IT infrastructure, an employee at each branch office was responsible for IT requirements, including data backup, which could take up to two hours per week. In addition, if the employee responsible for backing up data was absent, the backups were not made -- potentially compromising the data integrity of business-critical information. The company also relied on Concurrent Versions System, a software revision control system, to develop its in-house software. Although Silver Atena IT had a central repository for the software, developers at some of the branch offices were not always able to access the central repository due to bandwidth limitations -- making it difficult for the developers to determine if they were working on the latest revision.

"We decided to consolidate our IT infrastructure into a private cloud architecture to take advantage of both the cost savings associated with reduced maintenance and license fees, as well as improved file back-up processes. However, we were aware that this strategy could result in a deterioration of application performance, so we started researching wide area network (WAN) optimization solutions to overcome this issue," said Rudolf Labermeier, IT infrastructure manager, Silver Atena. "After a rigorous review of WAN optimization alternatives, we chose Riverbed because no other vendor could come close to their level of functionality."

Silver Atena was particularly interested in the RSP, which enables enterprises to run up to five additional services or applications virtually in a protected partition on the Steelhead appliance. Deployment of the RSP would allow Silver Atena to implement a Branch Office Box solution and remove local DNS/DHCP, file and print servers.

After deploying Steelhead appliances and RSP in five offices, Silver Atena experienced a 4.5x reduction in bandwidth utilization, which has enabled the company to consolidate its mission-critical applications to its data center, remove eight servers from the branch offices, and reduce management and software licensing costs.

"We now have a private cloud infrastructure thanks to Riverbed, and the RSP solution has allowed us to consolidate our IT services even further and work towards a truly server-less branch office infrastructure," said Labermeier. "Data backups are now made from a central location, take less time than previously, and we no longer rely on local staff to be available. Employees can now work on more productive activities."

In addition, Silver Atena IT now has a central repository for its software revision control system, ensuring that developers are working on the latest version when updating source code. "Riverbed has made our IT infrastructure more flexible and more effective and saved us time and money. We feel that our long-term investment in a WAN optimization solution has been protected by opting for Riverbed," said Labermeier.
