Fast, sophisticated automation and advanced 3D imaging workflows allow applied researchers to focus on scientific questions rather than microscope operation.

FEI (NASDAQ:FEIC) today released the new Talos™ L120C transmission/scanning transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) for life and materials sciences. It provides the high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) imaging and analysis capabilities of an S/TEM, yet is designed to enable all users to access excellent scientific results regardless of their microscope experience.

The Talos L120C S/TEM is FEI’s latest industry-leading development in a long series of 120kV instruments serving this important market segment. It offers a completely updated design that incorporates well-proven, advanced technologies from FEI’s high-end Titan Krios™ and Themis™ S/TEM families to improve performance and usability in laboratories with multiple users that have various levels of expertise.

“The Talos L120C gives scientists easy access to conventional 2D imaging capabilities as well as the latest advanced 3D imaging techniques,” said Trisha Rice, vice president and general manager, Materials Science Business, FEI. “Extensive automation and directed workflows provide an easy adoption path and fast results with no compromise in performance. Scientists who are not experts in electron microscopy can do their own work, gaining a new level of intimacy with their data that can lead to deeper insight and faster solutions.” The Talos L120C is a 120kV LaB6 S/TEM designed from the ground up to allow users at any skill level to get high-quality results with minimal effort. For example, most setup and alignment functions are automated and users can change optical conditions quickly and without tedious manual adjustments. Ultra-stable optics and streamlined workflows for advanced 2D and 3D imaging applications (such as electron tomography at cryo or ambient temperatures) deliver fast, repeatable results. MAPS™ software automatically acquires and stitches multiple images into a large-field composite image and permits fast and easy correlation with images from other instruments. Completely redesigned ergonomics and a Smartcam screening camera ensure operator comfort and permit remote operation when needed.

“These features combined make the Talos L120C the ideal instrument for the imaging and characterization of low contrast, soft or inorganic materials, and it is a robust and easy-to-use instrument for organic materials in life sciences research,” states Rice.

Peter Fruhstorfer, vice president and general manager of FEI’s Life Sciences Business adds, “Our Talos L120C is perfect for life or materials scientists who need access to advanced imaging capabilities or want a secondary screening tool to support a higher-end TEM, such as a Titan Krios or Themis. It is also ideal for customers that are ready to replace an older-generation S/TEM. The basic Talos L120C can be easily upgraded to address research needs of the future.”
