ZAMBIA CONSOLIDATED COPPER MINES
14th September 1998

                   ZCCM refutes damage to smelter

LONDON: 14 September 1998 - Following exaggerated reports in the Zambian media
of widespread damage caused by fire at the Nkana smelter over the week-end,
Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (ZCCM) has issued the following
statement:

"The smelter at Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (ZCCM) Nkana Division
at Kitwe is fully operational and has not been gutted by a fire which occurred
in the smelter on Saturday, 12 September 1998.

"The facts of the matter are that at about 16.00 hours, the No 3 anode
(casting plant), which contained molten copper, accidentally tipped over,
spilling the contents onto the plant floor and subsequently burnt some logs
nearby which caught fire due to the intense heat.

"Prompt response by the Nkana Division and Kitwe City Council fire brigades
quickly brought the fire under control ant it was extinguished by 17.00 hours.

"Normal operations resumed immediately, with the smelter operating at full
capacity. Primary copper production in the smelter at 305 tonnes that day was
above the projected daily target of 214 tonnes."
