                 ZAMBIA CONSOLIDATED COPPER MINES

LUSAKA - 3 July 1997 - A ZCCM spokesman confirmed today that there had
been a rockfall accident at the 990 metre level of Muflulira Division
underground mine in which two contractor workmen were fatally injured. 
Five other contractor workmen, who were part of the working team,
received less serious injuries and were rescued by the mine rescue team
at 0400 hours the following day.

The rockfall accident, which happened at 2304 hours on 1 July this year,
was as a result of a seismic event which happened without any prior
warning.

There has been no interrruption of other mining operations which
continue as normal.
