DALLAS, July 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Affiliated Computer
Services, Inc. (ACS) has successfully launched a new
state-of-the-art "911" dispatching and mobile data system for
Oklahoma City Police and Fire Departments to improve each agency's
response during an emergency, and provides advanced features to
enhance first responder safety. Featuring new GPS equipment and
software applications installed in police and fire vehicles, the
new integrated dispatch system supports map-based displays of
originating locations for emergency calls from wireless callers,
and allows dispatchers to assign incidents to the appropriate and
often closest first responder. "Developing and installing a complex
public safety system such as this is a large undertaking that
involves several city departments and a number of service, supply
and software contractors," said Mark Meier, Information Technology
Director for the City of Oklahoma City. "We are very pleased with
ACS' continuing commitment and the success of this project." The
new system, which went live last month, replaces a 20-year-old
dispatch system and provides more features and functions that take
advantage of the city's year-old wireless broadband network that
spans more than 550 square miles in Oklahoma City with 95 percent
coverage within the urban area. This network, also provided by ACS,
is the largest public safety Wi-Fi network in the country. "The
city's new broadband wireless mesh network developed as part of the
Public Safety Capital Projects has been in production nearly a year
now and has provided new capabilities; however, the new dispatch
and mobile data applications really make use of the network's
bandwidth and enhance the police and fire officers' mobile
capabilities," said Kerry R. Wagnon, Public Safety Program Manager
for the City of Oklahoma City. Approximately 750 local police and
100 fire vehicles were equipped with the integrated "911" system,
and more than 1,000 police; 600 firefighters; and 150 dispatchers
were trained to use the new system. "This emergency management
system will not only enhance response in Oklahoma City but it will
also help to improve officer safety and operational efficiency,"
said Louis Schiavone, ACS Vice President of Public Safety and
Justice Systems. "This launch is just the first step in ACS'
continued commitment to developing innovative public safety
solutions for police, fire and EMS departments across the country."
