Transformers are critical pieces of equipment that regulate voltage and help deliver electricity safely and reliably to homes and businesses. The transformer, weighing about 55 tons (equivalent to nine adult elephants), was transported by truck from Roanoke, VA, to the substation on Athens Avenue – nearly 500 miles and a five-day commute – and lifted into place by crane. The installation marks a visible step forward in a broader plan to strengthen the local electric system and help improve reliability for nearly 11,000 customers.A second, identical transformer will be delivered to a local Illuminating Co. service center the week of June 29 before being moved to the Lakewood Substation later this summer. This added flexibility gives crews more options to shift load and restore power more efficiently during outages and periods of peak demand.In addition to improving reliability for customers directly served by the Lakewood Substation, this upgrade may also benefit surrounding communities. With increased capacity and flexibility, Lakewood circuits could potentially be used to help restore service to customers supplied by neighboring substations during outages, further strengthening overall system reliability in the area.Investments Already Making a Difference
The transformer installations are part of a series of upgrades already improving reliability in the Lakewood area, including:Substation Upgrades: All four breakers have been replaced at a substation serving Lakewood, which helps strengthen the equipment that supplies power to Lakewood.Neighborhood Equipment Upgrades: Crews have resolved voltage issues in several areas and continue replacing equipment on neighborhood utility poles to improve reliability and reduce the risk of outages. (NYSE: FE), have asked the Public Service Commission of West Virginia (PSC) to review electric rates so the companies can keep investing in a safe, reliable electric system that is better prepared for severe weather, while keeping costs in mind. The filing includes two options. One is an inflation-based approach that would spread smaller increases over time instead of one larger increase, giving customers more predictability. The other is a traditional rate adjustment based on work already completed to strengthen the electric system and includes a proposed program focused on reliability and future infrastructure investments.Work completed in recent years includes:Upgrades that have reduced the length of outages tied to the high-voltage transmission system in West Virginia by 43.8%.Improvements to key equipment at the Fort Martin and Harrison power stations to help keep power generation safe and reliable.Upgraded poles, power lines and equipment to help the system better withstand storms.Under either option, residential customers would continue to pay the lowest rates among West Virginia's regulated electric utilities. Under this proposal, the companies would not seek another rate review until April 2028.Base Rate Adjustment
As an alternative, under the traditional approach, Mon Power and Potomac Edison have proposed an adjustment of $188 million. The figure includes funding for a reliability and infrastructure improvement initiative to replace older equipment and add new technology to reduce the number and length of outages. The work, which began in January, is designed to help the line better withstand severe weather, falling trees and other hazards that commonly cause power outages. The Maryland portion of the Gore-Doubs-Goose Creek Improvements Project will upgrade 18 miles of Potomac Edison's transmission lines in Frederick and Montgomery counties and utilize existing power line routes to minimize effects on the environment and nearby communities. The project also has portions that span parts of Virginia and West Virgina.The PSC will begin a review of Potomac Edison's Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) application, a permit that confirms the project is needed and meets requirements for safety, reliability and fair cost. FirstEnergy's Ohio and western Pennsylvania service areas were hardest hit, with widespread tree and equipment damage. While downed trees and road closures can slow progress, crews will work 24/7 to safely make repairs and restore service. As part of this effort, FET will invest about $950 million to modernize equipment, rebuild older lines and upgrade substations. Some of these projects will be carried out through the Grid Growth Ventures LLC joint venture with Transource Energy LLC, while others will be built directly by FET subsidiaries American Transmission Systems Incorporated (ATSI) and Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission LLC (MAIT) in their respective service territories.FET submitted the projects through PJM's 2025 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) open window process, and the PJM Board of Managers approved them on Feb. 12. This work is similar to improving a busy neighborhood road by installing new stoplights to improve traffic flow, repaving the road so it's smoother and safer and rebuilding a side street that's worn out.In Pennsylvania, MAIT is investing $165 million, including:$72 million to rebuild an existing 115-kV line into a double circuit line in York and Adams counties. This is like turning a two-lane road into a four-lane road so more electricity can move at once, especially during high demand periods.$93 million to upgrade and tie in existing 500-kV lines in Armstrong and Indiana counties. (NYSE: FE), have selected a 35-acre site next to the companies' Fort Martin Power Station in Maidsville, W. Va., as the home of  a new 1,200-megawatt natural gas power plant that will help keep electricity reliable and affordable for West Virginia families and businesses for years to come.







Once complete, the plant is expected to generate enough energy to power roughly half a million homes, strengthening the region's energy supply as demand continues to grow.If approved by the Public Service Commission of West Virginia (PSC), site work would begin as early as 2027, with the plant coming online in late 2031. The companies expect a decision from the commission within the next year. The natural gas plant is a key part of Mon Power and Potomac Edison's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which outlines how the companies will continue delivering reliable, affordable power to customers over the next decade. At the center of the project is replacement of equipment originally installed in the 1970s. Supporting Maryland's Clean Transportation Goals  
Maryland's Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022 requires public school systems to purchase or contract only zero-emission vehicles moving forward.
