Daimler AG said Friday that its commercial-vehicles business Daimler Truck AG is buying a minority stake in Luminar Technologies, Inc. as part of a strategic partnership.

U.S. company Luminar is developing lidar hardware and software technology, a sensing technology that is used for the development of autonomous vehicles. Daimler aims to use this technology to work on highly automated trucking.

"The teams will work closely together in order to enhance lidar sensing, perception, and system-level performance for Daimler trucks moving at highway speeds," Daimler said.

Daimler didn't disclose financial terms of the deal.
