Environmental group Fridays for Future called for protests at Siemens AG's (SIE.XE) locations in Germany on Friday, criticizing the engineering group's involvement in a controversial coal-mine project in Australia.

In an article in German newspaper Welt on Tuesday, the group's members Luisa Neubauer and Nick Heubeck asked the company to reject the order contract, which sees Siemens supplying rail infrastructure parts to the project. The Carmichael coal-mine project by Indian conglomerate Adani Enterprises Ltd. (512599.BY) has been facing criticism for its environmental impact.

Fridays for Future started an online petition--calling on Siemens to stop its Carmichael involvement--that so far has gathered more than 41,000 signatures.

Siemens was aware of potential protests, a company spokesman said, adding that "demonstrations and expression of opinion are the right of every citizen as long as they remain peaceful."

He said Siemens saw itself as part of the solution to climate change and that the company contributed to the fight against it with technological advances. "However, this isn't just black and white."

The company has been criticized for the contract with Adani before. In December last year, Siemens Chief Executive Joe Kaeser said on Twitter that he was taking concerns seriously and the project was under review.
