Telefonica Deutschland (O2D.XE) said Monday that it had agreed with Deutsche Telekom (DTE.XE) and Vodafone (VOD.LN) to expand network coverage in Germany.

The network operator said the companies plan to build up to 6,000 new mobile sites, constructing radio masts and towers in order to provide areas such as rural regions with better coverage.

The improvement of coverage was required by the national telecoms regulator Federal Network Agency as part of an auction for 5G mobile frequencies, which the operators won--together with 1&1 Drillisch--earlier this year.

Telefonica Deutschland called the auction conditions "disproportionate."
